DSL vs Cable & Internet Probs

Webby and other Internet Savvy PPOers, give it to me and the others that need to be informed.

    Does anyone have the explanations?

BTW, I have both the DSL and Cable modems for the next few days.

    General Problems:

    1. Uploading file by FTP

Cable modem times out after only a few small file xfers
DSL was able to do the whole file folder without interuption.

    2. Are the company's limiting(caps) me on both Cable and DSL on xfer rates?

    3. I went to the Bang Site and it said TOO MANY people were viewing the site. Is this a problem in the future for other sites??

I'm not too savy on all of this stuff. But I do know that the Caps (limits) on the xfer rates are in place for most major DSL and Cable companies. I switched from DSL back to cable just for that reason, better - faster xfer --> i know it sounds dumb, but the performance was better with the Cable for me rather than DSL here in Tampa w/ BrightHouse.

There is no doubt that cable is better (faster) than DSL. I have cable at work and DSL at home. I'm not that up on transferring megafiles, I have no problem at the university, but it will time-out sometimes at home. The provider probably has a cap the transfer volumes. Sorry, can't help much.

Here is some info. on transferring files: http://www.cnaffin.com/transfer.html

FTP is a pain in the butt.

I am trying to do it myself for a video I made for PP.O.

I have DSL. Yes, Cable is way faster...but DSL is good enough for me.

snowinapril first of all are you still having trouble with this? FTP's can be a huge pain but it usually not a problem with the provider (DSL or cable) but more having to do with the hardware involved, firewalls, anti virus software to be honest it s huge pain the the butt?!

but if you'd like help on it let me know through a PM or on the board here. First question would be are both the DSL and Cable going into the same router?

Cable is much faster that DSL when it comes to downloading information, but when it comes to uploading, DSL is the way to go. Cable upload speeds are gradually getting better but they still are not as good as DSL. If you are doing a lot of uploading, I would suggest DSL; otherwise, cable all the way!

I had cable but the prices were getting ridiculous. I switched to DSL and am perfectly happy. You can notice a slight change in download speeds but not that much. If price is a concern...go DSL.

It may be that the cable software only sees browser use as activity, not ftp use. Try surfing using your browser at the same time the files are uploading to the ftp site.

Each cable/DSL servive provider is different. Try running some speed tests. Here are a few:

Sorry, I don't know what the bang site is.

    Hope this helps.
