Drunk birds behave a lot like drunk people

Four pelicans were detained in Southern California on suspicion of public intoxication, though the culprit may be poisoned algae, the Los Angeles Times said.

One pelican reportedly crashed through the windshield of a car Thursday on Coast Highway in Laguna Beach.

The Times said other pelicans suspected of public inebriation were found in backyards or wandering neighborhoods in a daze.

Authorities say the likely culprit is domoic acid, a poison sometimes found in algae, which the birds often eat.

Lisa Birkle, assistant wildlife director at the Wetlands and Wildlife Care Center in Huntington Beach, is urging Southern California residents to be on the lookout for more strange behavior in the birds. Ocean waters south of Los Angeles Harbor have tested positive for the poisonous algae.

Blood tests for domoic acid will take about three weeks, the Times said.

A similar phenomenon occurred in Northern California in 1961 and is thought to be the inspiration for Alfred Hitchcock's classic horror film "The Birds."
