Do you consider golf a sport?
This is something that I've gotten into many arguments over. It started when a sportswriter wrote an article explaining why Tiger Woods is one of the greatest athlete's of all time. But many people don't think he is, because they don't consider golf a sport.
But that's not the point of this thread, I'm just using Tiger as an example.
I'm not just talking about golf, many people don't consider NASCAR,billiards, or bowling a sport either.
Dictionary.com defines sport as "an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc."
Now we all know there is nothing physical about golf, but personally I don't think that
excludes it from being a sport.
So I guess my question is, in your opinion, are these activities sports?
And if not, what are they?

Re: Do you consider golf a sport?
There is a definite competition or a drive to win.
Good question?
I think "an athlete" is going to be better at golf than the avg joe on the street.
Let's just call these sports equalizer sports.
They close the gap between the physical skills needed to play, let's say basketball to bowling.
In basketball at a pro level, you have to have the highest physical skill to even get on the court.
With bowling, you don't have to have that overall physical ability.
Granted there is skill involved in bowling.

Golf, tennis, NASCAR, bowling, etc....maybe sports, but they're not worth the time they get on TV. Does anybody actually watch golf or tennis? The only reason to watch tennis, is if there's some hot chicks playing. Golf chicks mostly look like dudes so there's no reason to watch them.
The only sports that really matter are football, boxing and hockey

Something to add...
Do you consider "Action Sports" (skateboarding, snowboarding, blading, surfing, etc) sports, and do you consider the participants "athletes?"
I sure do, but I'm biased...-Sno

I consider those sports too. The average person could not pull off the stuff that those "x gamers" do.

Oh its deffinitly a sport, anyone who says no just hasnt played it.Tiger is one of the masters of it, and I truly bow down to his skill.I dont play golf becuz I suck at it, and I'm not that big of a fan of it.However I give respect to anyone who plays it, cuz its tough sport.

Playing the way they do in the PGA, I do consider it a sport. (no golf cart)
