Bankruptcy makes gift cards worthless

NEW YORK - You know that Sharper Image gift card you got for Christmas? Right now, it's worthless. And other gift cards in your wallet could lose their value, too.

As more retailers file for bankruptcy or go out of business, more than $75 million in gift cards are at risk of becoming worthless pieces of plastic this year.
How is it any different than, say, if you bought something from a shop but the shop went out-of-business before it was delivered?
You line up wayyyy behind the banks and other creditors before your issue is addressed, if it ever is.
:

That's BS too.

You honestly think that you, as someone who purchased something from a retailer, should be entitled to get money back before the people who loaned the company the money in the first place that allowed them to open?

=Z=
Loaning money to any enterprise is a risk.
Are you suggesting that customers should assume that same risk?
I'm suggesting that the current system, where certain types of creditors are lined up ahead of consumers for restitution in bankruptcies is essential to encouraging investment into business.
Although, while encouraging creditors to invest in businesses is essential to economic growth, economic growth won't get stimulated if consumers repeatedly get ripped off or screwed.

I hereby declare that use of the rolling eyes emoticon no longer valid in arguments or debates of any kind on PP.O. It's condescending and entirely useless. All in favor say Aye.

Aye.

I heard this morning that Sharper Image is amending their stance on accepting gift cards. Apparently, they will accept them if the buyer uses the card for one purchase, but that purchase must be for twice the amount of the gift card. Can't find a link to put up.
