CLEARING THE AIR ON SALISBURY'S STAKE

There have been a flurry of reports of late regarding the supposed reason for the one-week suspension of ESPN's Sean Salisbury, on which we reported in October 2006.

Late last month, Mike Freeman of CBSSportsline.com wrote that an unnamed NFL analyst was suspended for taking pictures of his pecker with his cell phone, and then showing it to "numerous, uncomfortable women."

The fine folks at the Big Lead attempted to connect the dots, concluding that the cell-phone self-portraits had been prepared by Señor Salisbury.
Then, our friends at Deadspin publicized the matter.

So we've received thousands (okay, hundreds . . . okay, dozens . . . okay, a few) of e-mails asking us to close the loop and confirm that Salisbury was suspended for cell phone shenanigans.

Sorry, our general counsel (i.e., me) refuses to allow it.
We've never reported it, never will.
If others wish to come to that conclusion based on available information, so be it.

All we've ever reported is that Salisbury was suspended for a week (and that no one noticed).
We begged ESPN to tell us it wasn't true and that we'd kill the story, but ESPN wouldn't.

Meanwhile, the story is catching fire (and fire probably isn't the best term to use when talking about a man's most sensitive of regions).
We've even heard that Dan LeBatard was talking about the issue on his Miami radio show recently.
If true, it could get LeBatard the Jason Whitlock treatment from Bristol.

But, hey, it's probably smarter to get on ESPN's poop list via words, not actions.
