Can Someone Explain This To Me?

HAZLETON, Pa - A U.S. judge on Thursday struck down as unconstitutional a local law designed to crack down on illegal immigration, dealing a blow to similar laws passed by dozens of towns and cities across the country. U.S. District Judge James Munley said the city of Hazleton, 100 miles north of Philadelphia, was not allowed to implement a law that would fine businesses that hire illegal immigrants and penalize landlords who rent rooms to them.
It is a national law that you CANNOT hire illegal immigrants.
How can a local law be 'unconstitutional' when a federal law dealing with the same subject is legal.
NO judge has any constitutional authority to do this.

Can someone explain this to me. Maybe Cajun, he's a federal lawyer.

I'm wondering if it is a jurisdictional issue, that is if the constitution states that the federal laws can only legally address this opposed to the more local lower courts.
But being I'm not a lawyer or an American I'm pretty much pulling that one out of my butt.

Only one possible answer for this.
The judge is married to an illegal immigrant!

Just another liberal judge legislating from the bench.
His ruling will be overturned on appeal.

One way to answer your question is to read the judges decision:

I'm not that interested, so here's a nugget from http://freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1872126/posts

"Whatever frustrations ... the city of Hazleton may feel about the current state of federal immigration enforcement, the nature of the political system in the United States prohibits the city from enacting ordinances that disrupt a carefully drawn federal statutory scheme," Munley wrote.

Thanks for that link. What I get from it is that a cities laws cannot ursurp federal law. And that makes sense. But it seems to me that the judges ruling prevents the city from observing the federal law and so it still doesn't make sense entirely.

It sounds like the judge has been getting some work done really cheap.

The idea of the constitution having "amendments" means that it was designed to CHANGE to fit the times.

That is what "AMEND" means. To change or fix.

This may just be a step in that direction, or not.

But the constitution is not set in stone. It is made to be a set of guidelines and liberties that our founding fathers thought every human deserves. As the times change, those charged with leading our country have a responsibility to adapt to our evolving culture and values.

Just the objective information that I thought everyone learned in 9th grade civics.
