They still speak old English. Hell, they even still say it with an accent. The Brits haven't mastered modern English yet.

Obviously there are exceptions to every cause, but I think there are citizens of certain countries more likely to move somewhere and not pick up the language.
Not sure if it's caused from laziness, unwillingness, stupidity, or if they just don't give a shit because we enable them.
I'm leaning towards the later.

If I moved to Germany or Finland (or wherever) I would try my damndest to pickup the language.
I'd be a jackass if I didn't and istead expected the majority of the population to adapt to me!

The "speaking english" complaint is not directed towards the people of foreign lands who are in the U.S. visiting...
But rather the residents who have lived here for several years and refuse (or are too incompetent) to study or pickup on the english language.
It's not that complicated and is the least somebody can do.

The point is your German granparents did learn the language.
I'm sure it wasn't very easy but they put the effort and time into it and adapted to their new culture.

I hate blind people too by the way...nothing ruins a good day like running into a blind person.
