Best QB of all time
LosAngelis brought this up on another forum and I wanted to continue it here because its just fun to talk about this stuff. Of course there is no right answer but the main contenders have to be Johnny Unitas, Terry Bradshaw, Dan Marino, Fran Tarkenton, Joe Montana, John Elway, and although it pains me to concede anything to Green Bay, I have to throw Brett Favre up there too. Otto Graham, Joe Namath, and Roger Staubach also come to mind.
For me it comes down to Marino and Montana, and the only thing keeping me from giving it straight to Marino is the lack of a Super Bowl win. First there are his records. Dan Marino holds just about every single record in the book and I think that is just as big if not more of an accomplishment than winning the Super Bowl. Most career yards, most career TD passes, most season passing yards, most season TD passes, highest rookie passer rating, most seasons leading league in completions, most career completions...the list goes on and on and on. You can argue all day about what stats do or don't prove but leading in so many categories counts for a lot in my book.
He wasn't very mobile and was more of a pocket passer but then so was Montana. He had the quickest release which enabled him to avoid pressure and pick apart defenses better than anyone. He could spread the ball around well and never had any real big name receivers.
Like I say the only reason Montana gets considered for this is because quarterbacks get paid to do one thing and get remembered for one thing: winning. And Joe Montana won games at every level...high school, college, and pro. Three time Super Bowl MVP is one record Dan Marino doesn't have and that makes a difference when people evaluate who is the best team or player.
