    Any European Travelers in here?

Hey, off topic, but does anyone in here travel to Europe much?

I am wondering how do you get the best exchange rates for Pounds and Euros, do you normally do it through a bank here in the States before you leave, one of the airport locations, or at a bank in country over there.

I dont do this kind of travel much, and I was just wondering if the locations at the airport are not as good since like the gas stations near the airport who catch all the people returning rental cars they take advantage of their location by not being as good of exchange rates.

Anyone have any experience with this?

An ATM will always give the best exchange (assuming it's on the Visa network), don't go to a teller anywhere.
Use your check card wherever possible.
The only Euro's we take while going is enough for an emergency, such as cab fare.
Then just find an ATM while there.

My wife is going this month and I told her to use her credit card as much as possible, but she definitely wants to get cash for just what you said, cab fares, etc.
Do you know will a normal bank ATM card from the States work in most all ATM's in Europe to get Euros out?

Yeah as long as it has the Visa logo on the card.
    It's basically universal.

Dang it...for some reason I can't quote anything.

Any card that's attached to a chequing account will work.
You must have a 4 digit PIN.

    Good point huxx.
Make sure you know the numbers for your code, not letters.
There are no letters on the atm keys in europe.

Not true, for some reason my card did not work in Switzerland or Italy.
If i were you, try to get some money from your bank before you leave, they will give you the best rate.
Airport booths will usually charge anywhere from an extra 3% to an extra 9%, and the Money conversion stores on the streets aren't much better.

    Really?
    Wow I never heard that.
I do know that you have to call both your bank and Visa before going... otherwise they put your card on hold until they hear back from you.

yep, when I was there, the conversion rate from CAD to Swiss Francs was $1.30CAD per $1.00 SWF.
The shops and airport booths wanted over $1.40

And do make sure you call your bank and visa, otherwise they will assume that your card got stolen by some european guy and they will put a hold on your card.
I would actually probably recommend getting travellers checks.

    what? you have letters?
You must be one of the few countries in the whole world that use letters, as I've never seen them anywhere else.
(also one of the few that still use the Imperial system for measurement too )
