All hail the King of Kings.

Luc Robitaille is the greatest goal scorer in the history of the Los Angeles Kings. That is the way it is and that is the way it should be.

He is known in L.A. by only his first name, a status normally reserved for icons within the world of entertainment. He has been a huge part of the hockey explosion in L.A., playing well into his third decade.

Robitaille smashed Dionne's goal record with the Los Angeles Kings in grand style Thursday night, netting a hat trick in an 8-6 victory over the Atlanta Thrashers.

The three goals gave the three-time Kings star 552 with the club, two more than Dionne - a Hockey Hall of Famer.

Robitaille tied Dionne at 4:20 of the first period when he intercepted a clearing pass, then got a return feed from Derek Armstrong before faking goalie Mike Dunham to the ice and slipping the puck past Dunham's stick. His record-setting 551st came on a breakaway as he beat Dunham between the pads with the teams skating 4-on-4.

The Montreal native, who turns 40 next month, capped the night with an empty-netter, just his 10th goal of the season but 663rd overall in 1,401 NHL games. Robitaille, who broke in with the Kings and was the NHL rookie of the year, is the league's career-leader in goals by a left winger.

Luc was drafted in the 9th round (171st selection)

His first Kings goal came in his first Kings game, October 9, 1986 against St. Louis.

In his first season, he led all rookies with 45 goals and 85 points. He won the Calder Cup as the NHL's Rookie of the Year and was named an NHL Second Team All-Star. Ironically, it would be the only season he would play with the man he would eventually surpass, the great Marcel Dionne.

Over his second and third seasons, he was named NHL First Team All-Star both times.

He was the league's highest scoring left wing for four consecutive years.

In 1989-90, Robitaille was elected an NHL First Team All-Star for the third straight year, netting an eye-popping 52 goals and 101 points.

Two seasons later, Robitaille set NHL records for goals (63) and points (125) in a season by a left wing.

As the years began to pass, so did the milestones. The All-Star games became less of an event and more an annual ritual. He picked up his 500th goal versus Buffalo in 1999. Played in his 1,000th NHL game in in St. Louis in 2000.

His name is now mentioned with the greatest left-wingers the game has ever seen. Bobby Hull. Johnny Bucyk. He has more points than any left wing that has ever put on an NHL sweater.

All hail the Kings of Kings...Luc Robitaille. :king:
