First thing I thought of was that the soldiers are bigger and carrying more, just like Bkfldviking said. Lets home they some day won't have to jump out of planes and wars can stop

Since wars have been going on since the beginning of man...it seems unlikely that they will stop anytime soon.

You can dump air and descend faster with any chute. But in reality, there isn't a lot of use for combat jumps anymore.
HALO insertion is still used.

But Helicopters and that new goofy plane with the engines that can go vertical have replaced the need for most combat jumps.

There was only one official combat jump in the Vietnam war. It was made by the 173rd Airborne.

There was at least one combat jump in Panama.
Every once in awhile I would meet and 82nd guy with a mustard stain.

Yep that industrial complex keeps expanding.
I remember at one point them building mass quanities of spears and shields for the Romans, then on to bows and arrows for the Sioux and before long it's WMD's for the evil Bush empire.

We had quite a few Rangers and 82nd guys that would go to the 101st that had many jumps (not just a "5 jump chump") and their knees would be shot.
