Ok, so now you started it. Who sang this song, what year and what country of origin?

    Per wikipedia
""99 Luftballons" (literally "99 floating balloons") is a protest song by German singer Nena that reached number one in Germany in 1983. Both the English and German versions of the song tell a story of 99 balloons floating into the air, triggering an apocalyptic overreaction by the military."
It annoys me when stations play the English version. I'd rather hear the German, even though I don't understand any words but "Luftballons" and "Captain Kirk".

Thanks to Josdin for the awesome sig!

    Re: 99 Red Luftballoons

Goldfinger redid it and put a punk twist to it

(as sung by john feldman - goldfinger)
    (originally by nena - 1984)
(includes a verse from "99 luftballons" - also by nena)

You and i in a little toy shop
Buy a bag of balloons with the money we've got
Set them free at the break of dawn
'til one by one, they were gone
Back at base, bugs in the software
Flash the message, "something's out there"
    Floating in the summer sky
    99 red balloons go by.

99 red balloons floating in the summer sky
    Panic bells, it's red alert
There's something here from somewhere else
The war machine springs to life
    Opens up one eager eye
    Focusing it on the sky
As 99 red balloons go by.

99 decisions strait, 99 manseters meet
    To worry, worry, super-scurry
Call out the troops now in a hurry
This is what we've waited for
This is it boys, this is war
The president is on the line
As 99 red balloons go by.

    99 kriegsminister
    Streichholz und benzinkanister
    Hielten sich fuer schlaue leute
    Witterten schon fette beute
    Riefen: krieg und wollten macht
    Mann, wer haette das gedacht
    Dass es einmal soweit kommt
    Wegen 99 luftballons

    99 dreams i have had
In every one a red balloon
It's all over and i'm standin' pretty
In the dust that was a city
If i could find a souvenier
Just to prove the world was here...
And here it is, a red balloon
I think of you and let it go.

    99 knights of the air
    Ride super-high-tech jet fighters
    Everyone's a silverhero
    Everyone's a captain kirk
    With orders to identify
    To clarify and classify
    Scramble in the summer sky
As 99 red balloons go by.

Nena sang childrens books in German(since she is german), I didn't know about the TV show. But yes, she is probably the only German to hit number one in the US, Dire Straights???? or Scorpions???? or Queen????? Actually it would be hard to believe that Money for Nothing and Another Bites the Dust were not #1. Someone can probably prove me wrong on those two.

Anyway, I couldn't resist the title, I had to look.

Yes, she was and she is still big in Germany. She has her own show and hit records.
I think you are confusing Nena (from Hagen, Germany), who is the singer of "99 Luftballoons," with Nina Hagen, also German, who is a much bigger star. Nina Hagen is the one with the sci-fi show in Britain. However, Nina Hagen's music overall never reached success in the US market as much as Nena's "99 Luftballons" did.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nena

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nina_Hagen

As far as the translation of Nena's song goes, the U.S. English release was edited with modified lyrics that really took away some of the message's impact. The covers of the song that the American bands have done is usually the watered-down version too. The translations posted above do not directly translate the original German lyrics.

The Goldfinger version also appears to be missing a last verse in which the narrator talks about how she is left standing in the ashes of her city destroyed by Soviet and American missiles, with nothing left but a red balloon, which she releases into the air.

The original German language version is more pointed in its harsh condemnation of nuclear armament and the superpowers' holding the fates of Europeans hostage throughout the Cold War. This was noticeably reduced by the record companies for the song's release in America.

Ack. I'm now seeing that the final verse was included in the Goldfinger version, but for some reason they sang it second-to last??? WTF that destroys the whole song!!
