"You're not the boss of me."

Eleanor Petersen of St. Louis, Missouri, wants to do everything herself. So when her mom, Amy, was in a rush and buckled the car seat for her, Eleanor, 3, declared, "You're not the boss of me." Petersen had to bite her tongue to keep from answering, "You wanna bet?"
I see nothing wrong with that answer.
That's the answer I always got.

    Ahhhhh, those charming little turds.

One of my gorgeous daughters was a real drama queen when she was little. Actually, she still is pretty dramatic but it isn't my problem anymore. lol
One day when she was about 6, she decided to throw a temper tantrum in the store. She violently threw herself on the floor, screaming at the top of her lungs about how mean I was and when she finally took a breath I said; I'm sorry sweetheart, but that wasn't good enough for me to change my mind. Try again and this time scream louder. Oh, and more tears might help.
Everyone here is watching, so now is a good time to really make a good show of it.

That was the last time she tried that on me in public.

Personally, I don't think there is intelligent life on other planets. Why should other planets be any different from this one?

    I'm dissapointed!

I would have thought "Are we there yet" would have made the list.

    How annoying is that?

That is exactly what I was thinking. With my son in the car it seems as though it will never end. ;D

    Oooooo....that's a good one.
    I'll have to remember it.

These days, I'm of the school of "Okay, if you want to be that way, we'll go home" and then I pick up the little girl and carry her out to the car like a football (she's only 3, so deeper stuff like your example won't work yet).

Thanks to Josdin for the awesome sig!

I took to not acknowledging my kids when they acted that way in the store.
There were probably two or three times when I am pretty sure that every one else in Target hated me ;D, but it didn't take long before they realized that it wasn't going to work.

Now my daughter (4) has taken to negotiating for things she wants. "Daddy Pleeeease.
I won't hit my brother any more today if you get me a book..."

I just say "Yup", regardless of where we are (on the interstate, in the store, etc).
That usually confuses them long enough for them to forget.

I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with that approach.
While you think you're teaching the child an important lesson (presumably about listening to daddy), you are disturbing large numbers of people - and NOT teaching the child another important lesson about how you act in society.

Just my own parental thoughts - we all have our own ways to deal.
