3 Gophers "All-Americans"
I was very surprised Marony only made third team!
University of Minnesota senior center Greg Eslinger, junior running back Laurence Maroney and senior guard Mark Setterstrom have been named to the 2005 Associated Press All- America Team. Eslinger was a first-team selection, while Setterstrom was a second-team selection and Maroney was a third team choice.
Eslinger is the Gophers’ first first-team selection on the AP Team since safety Tyrone Carter and center Ben Hamilton were both selected in 1999. Eslinger was a third-team All- American by the AP in 2003. This is the first time Setterstrom and Maroney have been named to the team.
Eslinger has already earned the Outland Trophy as the nation’s top interior lineman and the Rimington Trophy as the nation’s best center. The Bismarck, N.D., native has already been named to the AFCA, FWAA, Walter Camp and Rivals All-America Teams in 2005. Eslinger is a three-time first-team All-Big Ten selection and has started all 49 games of his career.
Maroney tallied 1,355 rushing yards in 2005 to become only the third player in Big Ten history to rush for 1,000 yards in each of his first three seasons, joining Wisconsin’s Ron Dayne and Michigan State’s Sedrick Irvin. He also ranks second in school history in career rushing yards with 3,824, second in 100-yard rushing games in a career with 20 and second all time in school history in career all-purpose yardage with 4,676.
Setterstrom helped lead the Gophers to an average of 497.8 yards of total offense per game in 2005, which ranks fifth in the nation, is the highest average in school history, and ranks third all-time in Big Ten history for average yards per game in a season. Due in large part to his play, the Gophers’ rushing offense ranked second in the country and first in the Big Ten, averaging 279.9 yards per game, which is the second-highest average in school history and the seventh-highest average in Big Ten history. Setterstrom also protected the quarterback as the Gophers only allowed three sacks, the fewest amount of sacks allowed in the Big Ten in 2005.Kentucky Vikes Fan
