The 100MPG Hummer H3 makes me question everything I thought I knew

    http://dvice.com/archives/2009/04/the-100mpg-humm.php

I just love it when someone takes "convential" wisdom and turns it upside down.
I still want to see it tested in the North Country for a typical winter, but the possibilities are fun to contemplate.

Hummers are an easy target these days. They're a big, hulking symbol of greedy car culture: unnecessarily large gas guzzler driven by selfish people. They destroy the earth with their terrible gas milage and seem like a menace. But what if that horrible Hummer could get 100MPG?

Well, this one does. It's a modified electric Hummer H3, and it gets better gas milage than a Prius. How are we supposed to feel about this? I still feel a deep revulsion when I see that form, but if it's so efficient, isn't it fine? I just don't know what to think anymore.

    Amazing.
It could pull my boat but boy would it stink when I started throwing hunting dogs in it.
    ;D

I actually don't mind the look of the H3s.
Wouldn't want one, don't really see the point.
They have less interior room than a Ford Explorer, even if the H3 does get better mileage.

They are in talks with other auto makers to possibly use this technology in other larger vehicles.

I didn't hear much about it being cost effective for the consumer.
They said the H3s that they made are going to be fleet vehicles and a few special orders.

Here's a 100 mpg, bio-diesel, Hummer with a jet engine that whistles, and puts out 600 hp.

    So much innovation!

    *****

This (below) is what has irked me for 30 years.
I remember reading in my Weekly Reader in grade school how we were going to advance this that and the other thing in cars and it doesn't seem like we have even come close.

Nobody--particularly not Detroit. Indeed, Goodwin is doing precisely what the big American automakers have always insisted is impossible. They have long argued that fuel-efficient and alternative-fuel cars are a hard sell because they're too cramped and meek for our market. They've lobbied aggressively against raising fuel-efficiency and emissions standards, insisting that either would doom the domestic industry. Yet the truth is that Detroit is now getting squeezed from all sides. This fall, labor unrest is brewing, and after decades of inertia on fuel-economy standards, Congress is jockeying to boost the target for cars to 35 mpg, a 10 mpg jump (which is either ridiculously large or ridiculously small, depending on whom you ask).
