100 oil-coated penguins turn up dead in Argentina

Manage Alerts | What Is This? BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) -- About 100 oil-coated penguins have turned up dead in recent weeks off the coast of Argentina, most in a nature reserve near the frigid southernmost tip of Patagonia, environmentalists and authorities said Thursday.

The Argentine Coast Guard said it was sending flights in search of oil spills, but reported finding none that could have caused the birds coated in black crude to begin arriving on shores off the Straits of Magellan.

How do you know it was citgo? Whoever did this had better pay though!!

Citgo is owned and operated by the country of Argentina, many Americans don't even know this fact.....They produce a hell of alot of oil and also do their own refining........I'de say the chance of spill being a citgo originated spill, near or in the Argentina Coastal area is very very high......

Hey Tark, have you ever clubbed an oiled-up baby penguin? Let me tell you, if you hit them at the proper angle they will slide about 500+ feet on the ice.

It's fun for the kids too. You can set-up and make-shift goal and see who is the better shot.

WOW! Sad story...THAT must be why our oil prices keep going up...greedy penguins bathing themselves in our expensive oil...they probably all died from partying too much...OD'ing on cocaine and heroin and stuff.

More than 150 people died when an oil pipeline blew up at a beach village near the Nigerian economic capital Lagos, an AFP correspondent at the scene reported.

The Nigerian Red Cross had earlier reported more than 100 deaths from Friday's blast.

"Over one hundred people were burnt to death and beyond recognition following the explosion. Our men are on the ground on the scene of the disaster," Nigerian Red Cross Secretary General Abiodun Orebiyi told AFP by telephone.

"We have been unable to recover any injured person. All of them were burnt beyond recognition. We found at the scene of the explosion about 500 jerrycans which we suspect were used to steal fuel from the pipeline," he said.

"The raging fire has been put out and normalcy is returning to the place," Orebiyi said.

But he added: "We found that vandals have drilled holes on (into) the pipeline, from where they have been stealing fuel. We advise strongly Nigerians to desist from this dangerous act."

Private television station Channels also said more than one hundred people had been killed in the pipeline explosion, which it said took place in Ilado village, close to Lagos.

The TV did not show any images of the blast but during the morning a huge column of very black smoke was visible from the centre of Lagos, rising from the vicinity of Apapa port, where numerous oil installations are located.

Fire fighters, and officials from the Red Cross and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) were at the scene, Channels said.

Hundreds of people have been killed in pipeline explosions across Nigeria in the past few years.
