"Das Boot" was probably the finest foreign movie ever made. A close second would be "The Red Shoes"

The original is long enough at 149 minutes.
The director's cut is 209 minutes.
Nothing exciting was added.
That meant there was basically an extra hour of grunting and nervous stares underwater.
I've never seen the uncut version, but apparently it clocks in at 293 minutes and was originally a TV miniseries.
