U of Minnesota Basketball

As many of you know new coach Tubby Smith has taken the Gopher basketball team to a 3-0 record so far. But tonight (Tuesday) they have a real test on their hands as they play Florida State. The Seminoles recently knocked off nationally rated Florida but are inconsistent in their play. Tonight's game will be telecast nationally on ESPN2 at 6:30 Minnesota time (7:30 Eastern).

And by the way for those who thought Tubby was not a good recruiter (myself included) his 2008 recruiting class now ranks 7th nationally and first in the Big 10 ahead of Ohio State. I look for the Gophers to be in the "Big Dance" in 2008 or 2009.

The Gophers lost tonight 75-61 to Florida State.
It wasn't that Florida played so well it was that the Gophers played so poorly. They were out-hustled, out rebounded, and out-shot. I don't know the final stats but the Gophers only hit 33.8 % of their shots and only 26.9 from the 3-point range. The Gophers held a brief three point lead midway through the first half and then went cold.

The Gophers also had about 18 turnovers. A terrible effort!

Florida state is really not that good of a team either, at least by ACC standards. Really goes to show just how much of a powerhouse conference the ACC is (no offense to all you big ten people). Props to tubby for bringing in a good recruiting class. If he can make a run at the NIT this year I'd call it a successful season for the gophers.

My NC State team has a huge test tomorrow against Michigan State. I'm not really expecting us to win this one but IMO we're a top 25 caliber team and should be able to play up to their talent level and maybe even pull one off. We're coming off a win against #19 Villanova but lost to University of New Orleans in the 2nd game of the year completely unprepared...

Anyways.. sorry to jack the thread with that. Should be interesting to watch the Gophers progress under Tubby.

3-1 now after the loss to FSU.

I was impressed by the Gophers last night, since they have no superstars.
You could tell they have been coached well.

There is a huge difference.
Last year they had no clue where they were on the court.

Gopher defense was outstanding against UC Riverside as the Gophers cruise to a 75-38 win. 4-1 on the season now.

I think the Gophers have a chance this year to play in March.
Even though they don't have the talent yet, coaching might be just enough to get them there.


I am really hoping they do well.

I very much doubt they'll make the "Big Dance" but I think they will get in the NIT. That would really be a big step up for them this year.
