Funny... I don't hear anyone complaining about the Fighting Irish.
Once the people that constantly have to fight for some kind of cause have gone thru the entire sports & school names to rid them of minoritity implication, they will probably go after nationality next.
If I was Irish I would be mad also.
Since this year they haven't lived up to there name.

    Fighting Irish who?

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

look, the sioux tribes back in the 60's granted permission to the school to use the nickname, and even said that it was an honor..now some chief is just trying to get himself into the media by trying to take something away from white people..this isnt about the name being hurtful, its about a native american feeling that he should take back something from a group of white people
really, i challenge anybody reading this to think about this question im about to ask..when you hear 'modern native american', what is the first thing that pops into your mind?..okay, now tell me, doesnt fighting sioux actually sound like an honorable name compared to the casino and bottle of booze you just thought of?

if the name of the team was "north dakota stumbling drunks" then i can see somebody getting offended, because that is a stereotype of native americans..im not supporting this, but im just being honest, that it is indeed a stereotype of their people today..fighting sioux is a name of honor, and is in no way a stereotype of the modern day native american
I was watching some of the protests on our local news and one of those chiefs is saying Fighting Sioux is the same thing as the "N" word.

    :
The word you're looking for is "nigger", and saying the "n-word" is basically the same thing.
You're not using it in a racist context, you're not being a bigoted idiot, so personally, I have no problem with the usage of the actual word.
I'm very much with Louis CK and Carlin on this word, which is all it is and all it should be.
    A word.

    Anyway, about this particular topic.

I always figured that having a powerful, noble, and fierce native as your mascot would be a big compliment....think of FSU and what-not.
I can see the Redskins, but the Fighting Sioux?
    Please.

My family is Norse in origin, I'm not sniffling about the Vikings.

If those government leeches win this thing and UND has to change their mascot name..
No matter what, they'll always be the Fighting Sioux to me.

I'm not from the Mid West area but I don't think non Sioux have a right to tell Sioux leaders how to feel about the teams nickname. You may not eel it's a big deal, but it's a big deal to someone so why not simply change it.
Is the nickname worth pissing off the tribe?

the tribe didn't care at all until some PC moron made a stink about it and told them to make a big deal about it.
I know a lot of native americans that went there and didn't give a crap about the name
