Once the people that constantly have to fight for some kind of cause have gone thru the entire sports & school names to rid them of minoritity implication, they will probably go after nationality next.Funny... I don't hear anyone complaining about the Fighting Irish.
Since this year they haven't lived up to there name.

Re: Sources: UND faces retiring Fighting Sioux nickname
Let's say this...what if there was a university of Germany nicknamed the Jews?
I gurantee people would get mad about it and rightfully so.
The US also tried to do a similar thing to the natives and Sioux is not their own tribal name, it is Lakota. That's my perspective on it anyway

Re: Sources: UND faces retiring Fighting Sioux nickname
look, the sioux tribes back in the 60's granted permission to the school to use the nickname, and even said that it was an honor..now some chief is just trying to get himself into the media by trying to take something away from white people..this isnt about the name being hurtful, its about a native american feeling that he should take back something from a group of white people
really, i challenge anybody reading this to think about this question im about to ask..when you hear 'modern native american', what is the first thing that pops into your mind?..okay, now tell me, doesnt fighting sioux actually sound like an honorable name compared to the casino and bottle of booze you just thought of?
if the name of the team was "north dakota stumbling drunks" then i can see somebody getting offended, because that is a stereotype of native americans..im not supporting this, but im just being honest, that it is indeed a stereotype of their people today..fighting sioux is a name of honor, and is in no way a stereotype of the modern day native americanPeople who see life as anything more than pure entertainment are missing the point.

Re: Sources: UND faces retiring Fighting Sioux nickname
there is no argument here, the fact still remains that they were honored in the 60's to have the university use their name that way..you cant change your mind 50 years down the road

Hoeven says nickname decision shouldn't be rushed
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - Gov. John Hoeven says a decision on whether to retire the University of North Dakota's "Fighting Sioux" nickname should not be rushed.
"If you're going to have a thoughtful, inclusive process where you make sure that people have a chance to have a good dialogue, you don't try to set a timeline on that," he said.
UND recently reached a lawsuit settlement with the NCAA over restrictions on the use of its nickname and American Indian head logo, which the NCAA in the past has called ``hostile and abusive.' The school has three years to obtain the support of Sioux tribes or retire the nickname and logo.
University System Chancellor Bill Goetz has indicated he might support retiring the nickname in less than three years if the school and Sioux tribes cannot agree to continue it.
Some Sioux tribal leaders in North Dakota have maintained their opposition to the nickname.
John Q. Paulsen, president of the state Board of Higher Education, said earlier this month that he plans to talk with tribal leaders about their opposition. He said the talks would precede any formal discussions by the full board about whether to begin the process of shedding the nickname.
Don Canton, a spokesman for Hoeven, said the governor would be willing to be a part of negotiations with tribal leaders over the nickname, though Hoeven thinks UND should take the lead. Hoeven said members of North Dakota's congressional delegation also have told him they're willing to be part of discussions.
"What's more important than the timeline is that you have a thoughtful dialogue, you work to be inclusive and you be open to ideas and you be respectful, and you work through a good process," Hoeven said.
