The NCAA sucks......seriously
Some schools got to keep their nickname.....Illini....Seminoles come to mind.
They have no business being in the mascot game.
They should instead focus on the corrupt athletic departments and boosters out there.
Maybe it would be a good idea to also focus on making sure the kids are getting an education.
Screw the NCAA

Tribe votes to reject UNDnickname

That is just the first of what will be many votes.
I honestly didn't expect anything different at first.
It isn't over yet...

UND does not have a mascot - just the nickname.
Whether or not people agree with the nickname, my biggest problem is that the NCAA had no authority to impose this kind of sanction.
I guess you have to respect their wishes since the name calls out the Sioux nation but I'd like to see a quote explaining what they find offensive about the name.
It seems like The Redskins or Chief Wahoo of The Indians would be more offensive.
Not to make light of it but I'm Scandinavian and have no problem with The Vikings or their warrior heritage.
I saw at least one comment by a reader who is Sioux and said he/she was honored by the name and that the local tribes shouldn't have the only say.
I went to Brainerd High School and we were The Warriors, our mascot used to be a warlike looking Indian Chief then it got switched to a peaceful looking one, then eventually to this star or explosion looking thing.
So good luck Dakotans, luckily Goldy the Gopher seems happy.
Except for the bounty on his head of course.

Back in the day, many a battle was fought on the gridiron, track field and basketball court between the Northome Warrior and the Brainerd Warriors.
Now Northome has merged with Kelliher to become teh Northome-Kelliher Mustangs...... :P
Shamefull.
