you don't need 64 teams like basketball.
It could be 8 or 16 (I would prefer 16).
You could use the BCS standings to come up with the 16 teams....yes you will have complaints that team 17 or 18 didn't get in but the likelihood of one of those teams winning is rather small (usually).
You could use the existing bowl game titles for each of the playoff games....so now the Poulan Weedeater Bowl would actually mean something.

Then you could rotate the actual Championship game between the 4 BCS Bowl games.
Seems like a win-win for everyone.
You keep the Bowl Sponsorship, get a playoff and everyone is happy.

Every other division of NCAA football has a playoff why not the top division?
I actually think the best choice is 12 teams, with the top 4 getting a BYE in the first week.

Thanks to Josdin for the awesome sig!

12 with 4 bye teams would take the same time (4 weeks) as 16 total in the playoff.
I'd rather have them all have to play.
Win 4 and you win it all.................

Yes I follow the D I, but being a an alumi of a D II school, I don't get to upset with the current system.
D II has the playoff system and I like it but they don't get the media attention D I gets.
The BCS gets a lot of people involved and talking and I think that is what they want.

    I read that; I think it's awesome.

Texas beat Oklahoma. Same records yet Oklahoma is playing in the Big 12 Championship. Once againg the BCS fails.

The Titans are 11-1. The Steelers are 9-3. The Jets are 8-4.

If the NFL were college football, which team would the AFC send to the Super Bowl? Well, let's think about it.

The Titans have the best record but have played a weak schedule, and their one loss came decisively and at home to the Jets.

The Jets, as stated, beat the Titans in Tennessee but have lost a few games to bad teams, both at home and on the road.

And the Steelers have the second-best record and have played a far tougher schedule than either the Titans or Jets, but have not faced either of them head-to-head.

So I ask again: If the NFL were to use the college football system, which team would the AFC send to the Super Bowl? I think it might be the 1-10-1 Bengals because the college football system makes no sense and is stupid, insulting and a waste of everyone's time.
    This works.

Had a deep discussion w/ wifey's cousin-in-law Thanks day about this subject.
He is a Mich. fan and the only sport he ever participated in is sailing.
He is not in favor of a playoff because he feels with the BCS all games are "must wins."
He thinks the reg. season games would lose luster.
I feel you would still have to win to make the playoffs.
It works for the NFL and every other college sport.

    Re: National Championship Playoffs

I dont think it would work because a team with a weak ass schedule might get a ton more wins then a better team with a
    very very tough schedule

They would have to fix the schedules too IMO
