Bright lights. Big 10 football.

    Bright lights. Big 10 football.

The lights went on — and were to stay on all night — in a test of the 268 1,500-watt fixtures at the new University of Minnesota Gophers football stadium. All those lamps use 420 kilowatts of electricity per hour; many of them illuminate the 48-by-108 foot scoreboard, the third-largest in college sports. The Gophers return to campus this fall after decades of sharing the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome with the Minnesota Vikings.
