Thread: 15,000 show up at Gopher Spring Game

One of the largest crowds ever -- 15,000 -- showed up at the Metrodome to watch the Gophers Spring scrimmage. Many others braved the cold temps to join the Gophers players in their Victory Walk.


15,000 isn't that about the number of people who will be attending the opening home Vikngs game this year?

It's because no matter what they knew they were going to see a Gopher's win!

Smiley or not, the only way the Gophers outdrawn the Vikings is when Iowa comes to town to play and you know it.
And even then, it's only a tie.

I'm sure that 15k is an immpressive number for a college Spring Game in Minnesota.
At OU there is that many for any open scrimmage and twice as many for the Red & White game.
Hell they get 25,000 at the Tulsa Jenks vs.
Tulsa Union high school game year in and year out.

Alabama had 90,000 plus at their Spring Game, but it's all relative.

Places like Oklahoma and Alabama have no other franchises for the fanbase to attach themselves to. Last I checked Minnesota, and Minneapolis and St Paul specifically, had how many? You got the Wild, Timberwolves, Vikings, Lynx, AND the Gophers all competing for fans' attention.

Another way to look at is that places like Alabama, Oklahoma and Nebraska where college sports is king keep your larger markets supplied with pro atheletes.

That's a lot considering the population of the state.
That's almost 1% of the entire OKC metro area.

We have museums and lakes, rivers and streams, theaters and plays just like y'all do. For the last two years we even had an NBA franchise, and will again soon (Sonics). OKC actually beat Minnesota in attendance in a year when we knew the Hornets would not be back.
