The first computer was, by today's standards, rubbish. Today our home computers are over 1 billion times better, let alone supercomputers, and in another few decades computers will be another billion times more powerful. Now today we can create quite convincing images/simulations of the world around us. But the computers may be able to achieve amazing accuracy.
It may be possible to, one day, create a simulation that is accurate down to individual atoms, electrons, photons of light etc. In other words to create not just a simulation but a genuine clone of the entire universe, but say what the universe was like 100 years ago (or any other time in the past, this would allow us to re-play history, solving all sorts of debates about wars, literature, life ...religion... opps! Going to get attacked for that one!).
So if we pressed 'play' the atoms would move as they did in our universe, the electons would orbit the same as they did here, light would move like it did. In other words everything would happen in exactly the same way!
Society here on earth would proceed as normal, the same discoveries would be made, the same events would occur. What prehaps is more interesting is that YOU would be born and act as you do now (after all we are all slaves to particles, chemicals and electrical impulses), you would believe you were real and you would be concious.
To put it simply- We could have two identical universes running at the same time that would behave in exactly the same way, just one is 100 years behind the other.
But surely, what would mean that the 'fake' universe would create its own simulation when it caught up to where we were? So there would now be one 'real' universe and two 'fake' universes. Then that new one would eventually create another simulation...
So wouldn't that suggest that it is much more likely that we are living in a 'fake' unviverse than a 'real' one?
[size=10pt]As a final point, if we here ever make a simulation like the one described, we must realise that this is incredibly strong evidence that we our a simulation ourselves.[/size] Of course, rather terrifyingly, that means we can simply be unplugged at anytime.
(Of course this whole agruement hangs on there being no such thing as true randomness or free will, which I don't believe there is...)

BTW, whether or not there is true randomness is a whole debate in itself, especially in the field of Quantum Mechanics, where microscopic phenomena are at their heart objectively random.
And yet it is impossible to define a random number in reality...
