Super-G skiers - this didn't happen in a downhill race.

By that standard there is no such thing as a downhill race.

You have your slalom, giant slalom, and Super-G(iant slalom)

All downhill opposed to nordic or "cross-country"

Really, if your just skiing for fun, that would almost never happen to you.
When you are a world class racer, then you crank your bindings up so your ski doesn't flex off when you hit a rut.
Had any other person done that exact same fall with regular skis on a regular setting, the binding would have popped off right away, and in all likelihood your leg would have been alright.

The skis probably would pop off, but if you are going as fast as they are in Super-G you are going to be a bloody mess regardless.

Re: Rreason number 326 why I don't ski

But how many casual skiiers go as fast as they are in Super-G?
    very few.
Even if you wanted to i doubt many here could go that fast.
You need certain skis and you need to be very very clean with your turns to get that type of speed going.
It kinda bugs me when people see a crash and say "I'm never going to try that now."
Its like watching Nascar and saying "i'm never going to drive again"

hahah strangly enough, people still come out skiing dressend in fluorescent green and purple one-piece snowsuits.
And it's always green and purple.

Your right...I was just saying IF they were going that fast, the tension setting on the bindings wouldn't have to be torqued for you to sustain an injury.

I could go that fast if I wanted though.

People get injured skiing more than any other sport.

A teacher of mine in middle school was an Olympic skier until she completely blew apart her knee.

And did anyone else realize that the title of this thread has 2 Rs in "reason"

Downhill Racing is another category of racing

Slalom is very tight turns, where not much speed is attained.

Giant Slalom is larger turns, where you get going pretty good

Super-G is the type shown in this video.
The gates are farther apart, and you get going probably anywhere from 60-90 mph

Downhill is the widest turns, where the racers are usually in a "tuck" the majority of the time.
In this type of racing, one can attain speeds of over 100 mph

Ouch!! I think the skii probably should have come off before his leg did the third 360 degree turn.

This Sunday Bloodyhorns and I and our friend adam went to Powder ridge skiing. Me and bloody go all the time and have little trouble with the big jump. Adam although not an experienced skiier was not gonna be shown up so he his the big jump went about 70 feet through the air and 20 feet above the ground before coming down on his back. He was unconsious for about 45 seconds. After having the ski patrol take a look at him he was taken by ambulance to the hospital. He was alright, not much more than a cuncussion and a lot of bruising.
Bloody tried to get a video of it but when he clicked record their was no memory left, it would have been a really good youtube video.
I was at Powder Ridge last Sunday, I think my son saw your friend! He was snowboarding in the Terrain Park and was just telling me about this guy who crashed on skis there, we were on our way home from Spirit Mountain skiing over the last 2 days.
    The accident happened at 5:30pm.
It was a gruesome looking one.
when I approached him, his eyes were all wide and googly and he was twitching with his arms up in the air.
    He was clearly out cold.
Looked kind of like Tjack last year when he got rocked and laid there with his hands up in the air.

It was funny as hell at first, until we realized he was hurt.
jmcdon00 was chanting "Yard Sale!" from the top of the hill.
Then it was scary, and now it is funny again (now that we know he is fine).

Do you go to Powder Ridge often?
We go there quite a bit.
($15 lift tickets after 4 on Sundays)
