they started pulling away earth with a Bobcat tractor and dismantling the well block by block on Thursday.

Once the west wall of the well had been taken apart, firefighters put a harness around the donkey and guided it out with a rope.

??? Why didn't they just start slowly filling the well with dirt until it was nearly full & let the ass just walk out?

It doesn't appear that the donkey could stand up in the well.
If you look at the pic it is sitting down.
If it couldn't stand and walk around filling the well with dirt would bury it.
