If you want something basic, go with an Acer. I got mine at RadioShack for $300 on special. It works fine for me. Does everything I need it to do.
+1 on the Acer...very good products at lower prices.
Here are 3 examples with different size screens. Depending on what you need re processor speed, OS, RAM, hard drive, R/W dvd drive, etc., these are good products. In addition, I have had good luck using Amazon and Newegg to shop for electronics.

Acer 14.1 inch
Acer 15.4 inchAny man who afflicts the human race with ideas must be prepared to see them misunderstood. - H.L. Mencken

I would agree with that. I have owned 2 dell laptops and two HP'a and the HP's have both been more reliable and better performing. And with the Dell's, when I had to talk to customer service I almost went postal."ThorSPL" wrote:
My experience has been the opposite. You don't need to spend much, look in the 400-600 price range.
I do a LOT of work on laptops and I won't buy a HP/Compaq laptop ever again.... between the 5 people in my grad program who got them, 4 of theirs died (one twice actually) within 18 months... their customer service taught me never to buy from them again.
I've had personal good luck with Dell, Toshiba, and Sony...
I have a Compaq that is still kicken and booten.
It has been the Dells that have been the problem.
It was the 2003-2006 that the Dells really seemed to have a problem.
That was my experience.

I like how small it is for traveling.
I wish I could get it but I already have the 5315.

I have heard that Acer is not bad for a basic laptop. Dell is probably out of my price range. NO way am I looking on ebay or Craigslist for one.If you want something basic, go with an Acer. I got mine at RadioShack for $300 on special. It works fine for me. Does everything I need it to do.
I have also had a couple people say to try Office depot. My Guess is that we will go to Best Buy since the Wife gets a discount but I also don't want to get teh best discounted Laptop either. I know they sell Acer laptops. When she goes into work next time she ios going to se if she can find out what brands they see more of for service. BUt If we can get a better deal on a better one somewhere else. we are open to that as well.

Re: Laptop Help
I got a 300gb HDD, core2duo with centrino, 4gb ram for $600 with shipping. I saw the deal on Tigerdirect but then googled the same computer and got it for less through some other company. It took months of shopping around though, and Vista sucks hard.

Re: Laptop Help
My roommate has an acer. They come loaded with acer software along with a lot of other crap. The hardware is great for the price though. So I suggest if you do purchase one, clean it up before you start using it.

Re: Laptop Help
I'm not a fan of acers, my gf's parents had 3 acer desktops and they kept having motherboard problems, which is almost as expensive to fix as buying a new one.
