very often. Anyone know what is going on? It happens a couple times an hour. It just started recently.
1. Push in the reset button on the back of the modem to reset it.
2. If it continues to do it, time for a new modem. Mine was doing that, but not quite as often & I had it replaced with a new wireless modem. Problem is solved. Not to mention my speed picked up.
Thanks man. That is what someone else mentioned to me.
I just bought a wireless router so that kind of sucks.
Did the problem occur right after you installed the wireless router? Are there phone filters plugged into every phone jack that have any device, including phones & satellite dish receivers plugged into them? Are they plugged into the correct port of the filter? There is a difference.
Who is your ISP provider? What type of router did you install? What type of modem do you have & how old is it?
No I installed my wireless router months ago. I have no clue what a phone filter is so I doubt I have any. My internet is Charter. I have a linksys wireless router. My modem is a Motorola and is a good 3 years old.

I would give Charter a call.
Tell them your issue.
They might even give you a free modem upgrade as well as help to fix your problem.

Do you have WEP enabled?
If so, disable it.
As long as you have changed the router's name and default password AND set it so the router doesn't broadcast the SSID, you're protected from 99.99995% of the people out there who might want to use someone else's network.
And the .00005% who could get past those two won't bother with your network because there are enough idjuts out there who don't do those first two things.
I had huge problems with the same thing you are describing when I first set up my wireless network 4 years ago.
Disabling the WEP fixed it.

I would NOT call Charter, because I know they will tell you that the signal to your modem is fine (if your cable is working, then the signal to the modem is fine, they will say).
And then Charter will tell you to contact Linksys.

We had the same issue with Comcast. The first modem was good for awhile, then began dropping out. The problem was at it's worst in the afternoon when kids were out of school and the load on the neighborhood system was heavy. Second modem had the same problem out of the box,(unfortunately didn't happen while the tech was there). Third modem worked ok for a month or two, then began having the same problem. Forth modem has worked like a charm for a year. Knock on wood. Just keep harrassing the provider until they resolve the issue. You are paying for a service they need to supply.

If it's a cable modem you won't need the filters.
Take the wireless router out & run the modem directly to the computer bypassing the wireless router.
If the problem occurs again, it is more than likely your modem unless the cable connection at the modem is flaky.
If you have to replace the modem, I'd suggest getting one that has the wireless router already built into the modem. My old modem with the separate router wasn't allowing the full speed of my ISP service to get thru. Withe the new wireless modem, I no longer need my linksys & have a better speed rate.
