Okay went back to the basics this morning.. went an purchased a timing light and started with the spark.. and 4DC.. you were right on the first issue, we have spark but it isn't a consistant spark.. the 2 and 6 cylinders are firing like they should.. steady spark.. every other cylinder has a random spark down by the block.. seems to fire once in a while. Pull the plug out and test it against the block and it fires every time... additionally if we test right out of the distro cap.. it fires every time like it should..

Today.. we replaced the wires and cap and had no luck, doing the same thing.. spark right from the cap.. but only the 2 and 6 cylinders spark by the plug consistently and the rest intermittant spark..

Could we have a weak coil? Or would you point to the module? Checked the computer.. it tested out fine..

Actually did it in a couple of others as well but I deleted the extra posts.

    Guess I missed this one.

    Re: A Gearhead question...

Alright.. progress... but still no luck.. bought a new coil and another new module and getting a little stronger fire at the plugs, however same pattern.. 2 and 8 get consistant fire ever time.. 1 certain attempts throws consistant spark, but a couple trys later per the timing light we get an erratic spark. All other cylinders fire at random interval.. the strange part is if we pull the plug out of the block and place it near a ground it sparks every time..

So a grocery list of new parts..

    Coil
    Module (2)
    Wires
Cap and rotor were replaced about a year ago.. but only have maybe 1000 miles on them..

Could we have a defective cap or rotor cause this weird firing issue at the block.. again per the timing light we have consistant fire when we hook it comming directly out of the cap?

if the truck wasn't running prior to all this work , you may have a knock sensor issue.........

so kinda curious , why rebuilt the distributor and replace the head gaskets? did the truck run prior and just over headed? or did the truck stop running?

Well here is where it started.. truck ran fine, good compression and power... however it started to act up after starting cold and running for a while, if you shut it off it would not restart until it cooled off for a while.. generally about 2 hours or so.. talked to a friend of my fathers and he stated it sounded like the module.. so replaced it and the truck ran great for about a month or so.. then started to do the same thing again.. so I parked it this past fall and ran the van and car.. about a week or so ago the wife claimed the van as hers and I would rather drive my truck and dump the car, even though the truck is 11 years its senior, the car is nearing 100 k and wanna dump it before the magic number.. anyway back to the truck.. it has had a water leak seep around the intake and a buddy suggested to redo the head gaskets incase the truck is experiencing a vapor lock due to a bad head gasket.. hence the replacement of the all the gaskets from the heads up.. but I started the truck and ran it into the garage before pulling it apart..

After we had it put back together, it popped right off but was running extremely rough, at that point I didn't have a timming light so we tried dialing in the timming and we choked it off.. from the point on it has not fired up again.. tonight it would fire for a couple of seconds, however according to the timing light we don't get a consistant spark while the plug are in the block.. so that is where we sit.. intermittant spark at all cyclinders but 2 and 8... they fire consistantly. I personally just don't understand why for instance one will fire for a while and then just suddenly start to fire irratically.. so here I sit lost trying to figure out what next to do next...

Codes checked out fine.. "12" and I went through the fuses on Sunday just to make sure..

What else could cause a erractic spark pattern?
