    Computer Question 2

Different computer problem this time around.

Windows auto upgrade installed some of the normal upgrades, i.e Internet Explorer Security Update etc. It auto restarts and I take off to go do some stuff. I come back later on during the night and it appears that the computer is just in standby mode. So I moved the mouse and nothing happens. I think that the computer has just frozen up so I manually restart the computer. Well it clicks and the power button flashes instead of being constant like it normally is. My first thought is that is my power source went out and I plug up my other computer with my mouse and keyboard from the computer that went out. Well on the other computer the mouse and keyboard do not work so it appears what ever happened with the other computer fried the keyboard and mouse, but did not fry the modem or monitor. Anyone have any clue has to what happened? I have heard of power sources going out but not it frying the mouse and keyboard. Thanks for all the input.

    Thanks Josdin

    hmm.. this sounds fishy..

    1. the power on your pc turns on the led lights?

    2. comp a, the possibly burned one..

    a. makes beeping noise when you start it?

    b. does it go into the bios?

    c.
does the green light come on the keyboard for numlock.. or the laser if u have an optical mouse?

    3. comp b didn't see both keyboard and mouse?

    a. i've nvr heard of a mouse or keyboad burning out from a powersupply goof..

    4. u do realize.. pc's run on smoke.. when u see the smoke come out of the computer.. u can be sure it won't run again.

There is no smoke coming out of the burned out computer LoL.
Yah the light comes on but flickers and the hard drive makes a clicking noise of some kind, kind of like when a CD-Rom is trying to read a badly scratched CD.
The lights on the keyboard do not come on and the mouse is a normal mouse.
The computer will not go into bios. It just keeps beeping and the fan turns on... other than that it does nothing.

    Thanks Josdin

    Re: Computer Question 2

If the Power Supply did burn out, it may have taken the motherboard with it, which in a lot of cases isn't uncommon. If that is indeed the case, it could have affected the Keyboard and Mouse ports and caused damage. I don't think it would have fried them though, when you tried the Keyboard and Mouse on the other computer, did you restart that PC after? You need to restart some machines in order for them to recognize any new additions in the PS/2 ports.

    Re: Computer Question 2

My vote would be the motherboard as well.

    Some additional question......

Is this a laptop or a desktop?
Check to see if there is any physical damage from being dropped, kicked, water spillage etc.

Sounds to me like your HD is screwed.
If you have another HD that you can plug in try that and you will know if its your MB or HD.

Thats why I wanted to know if he could see any physical damage.
If not then the clicking noise is probably realated to the hard drive spinning (in a bad way).

The computer is a desktop. I have not opened the computer up but from the outside it looks okay.

Yah I turned off the other computer before I plugged in the old mouse and keyboard.

    Re: Computer Question 2

Only other thing in a desktop that can cause clicking (other than the hard drive) would be the fan (which keeps it cool by the way).

Check to see if that is spinning freely and not clicking.
If it is operational then I vote on the hard drive.
