    Computer Help Please!

Hey guys, had a problem w/ my computer, wanted to see if anyone had any thoughts.

Basically last night I'm on my computer, I go to plug my Sony mp3 player into the USB port, and the entire computer (Sony Vaio desktop) immediately shuts down. I try to turn it on and can't get any semblance of power or anything. No lights, doesn't show any signs of having any life.

Right now I'm on another computer and basically praying that I'm not totally screwed. Any ideas? I was gonna bring it to my work's IT guys tomorrow but just wanted to see if anyone had any thoughts before.

Any help/prayers would be greatly appreciated......

You try the obvious like making sure your power cord that goes from your CPU to your powerstrip was all the way pushed into your cpu?

Was the USB port on the front or on the back?

Does the computer have an integrated motherboard?

Yeah, I tried disconnecting/reconnecting the power cord to the computer and to different power outlets in case it was a surge protector screw up but didn't get anything.

USB port was in the front. Not sure about the motherboard...I'm always on my computer but IDK any technical info.

try turning the power strip switch off then back on. You may have popped the circuit braker in it

I tried the cord directly into the wall and didn't get anything, w/o the power strip.

So you are sure NOTHING happens? No harddrive spinning, no fan turning.....

Check to see if there is a switch on the back of your computer right by where the power cord plugs into, make sure it is flipped to 110V. If it is and your not getting any power at all then the only thing I can think of is your powersupply is shot. It happens.

The plugging in of the MP3 player was probably coincidental or was just the straw that broke the camels back.

Good news for you is powersupplies are fairly cheap and easy to install.

I highly doubt you "fried" your computer. A worse thing would be a pure blue screen or no screen and a series of beeps aka "Beeps of Doom"

How about the main house fuse/circuit breaker? Does a lamp or radio work when plugged into the same outlet?

Well that's very good news. I think this happened once before in the same situation, but the computer just was able to turn back on. That's the only reason I'm, thinking it wasn't coincidental, plus, it happened at the exact same time.

There's def nothing happening inside the computer. I'll check that switch, even though I know nothing about computer's I was thinking it could be something life that: a switch that needed to be reset or something...
