Actually, I think there is a small bit of "harm" in them.
    Here's why:

When I joined, I posted my "Hi, I'm Zeus" bit here in Free Beer.
I explained a bit about myself as a Vikings fan and then read the replies.
It was nice to see that long-time members welcomed me to the fold.

Now, because of the automatic nature, I (as a long-time member) am less likely to go into these threads and see if the new member has posted, since I know they are all automatically generated and that the new member (most likely, it seems) has not bothered to put any of their input into the thread.
Seems (to me) like it lessens the impact.

Actually, I never thought of this. I do enjoy reading the ones who put the effort into their first post on the board.

I still think the best idea is the PM and hope that they find it and post.

New posters can still introduce themselves, this is something different. Draws out some of those that might not otherwise get involved.
    How so?
As far as I can tell, of all the "Welcome New Member" auto threads that have been started, in only 2 of them has the actual new member posted.

    =Z=
That is because the majority of those who become members do not post at all...not even once.

    Maybe this will encourage them.

I have always wondered why people sign up and then never post. What is up with that?

Give us an option in our profiles to write a generic response to the people that sign up.
They join the site and a couple hundred people welcome them within seconds.

I think a lot may be impulse.
They may have time one day to browse the net and end up signing here.
They register, activate their account and then that impulse is gone.

We usually have quite a few now who sign, I approve, but they never activate their account.

More will probably sign up and not post since they know it makes Zeus's pussy hurt.

That's kinda what I did at first. Signed up, didn't work, or I wasn't aproved immediately or whatever, so I left. Came back months later and realized I had an account and started posting.
