Re: Automatic Free Beer Welcome Threads
It's a trial that webby is conducting.
If it works, good.
If not he will reevaluate it.
On the flip side, it is nice for a new member to see they are welcomed.

However, for every member it seems a bit much.
Simply because most of them don't bother to post anything personal about themselves in it.
I like the idea of a PM from the site that encourages them to post something here.
What I've always liked about these threads was the take from the new member, whether it is a long diatribe about their personal Vikings agony or just a quickie on who they are.

I'd keep them, no harm in it.

Here's why:
When I joined, I posted my "Hi, I'm Zeus" bit here in Free Beer.
I explained a bit about myself as a Vikings fan and then read the replies.
It was nice to see that long-time members welcomed me to the fold.
Now, because of the automatic nature, I (as a long-time member) am less likely to go into these threads and see if the new member has posted, since I know they are all automatically generated and that the new member (most likely, it seems) has not bothered to put any of their input into the thread.
Seems (to me) like it lessens the impact.

I think it should be tweaked and have random people banned that sign up for the boards.

As far as I can tell, of all the "Welcome New Member" auto threads that have been started, in only 2 of them has the actual new member posted.

You are the finest example of internet friendery that I've ever had the pleasure of knowing in an "I have no idea what kind of human being you are" way.At a minimum the automated stuff shouldn't appear in the latest threads on the right.
Personally, I don't bother with that section most of the time because there are ~8000+ members and probably only a couple hundred that contribute.
I'll say something to them when they post something....plus, I am not in need of fake friends.

He is a real God on PP.O as opposed to a greek God.
He's composed of spirit and vapor with endless powers.
A greek God can only cast about thunder and such, therefore vastly inferior in nature.
Have a nice day.
I like the auto pm introduction idea as well.“What takes a quarterback to the next level is not arm strength or mobility or any of that stuff. It’s the ability to play on critical downs. Manage third downs, or red zones or four-minute or two-minute situations"

Re: Automatic Free Beer Welcome Threads
I used to read them all and post in most; now I kind of skip over them - at least while at work anyways.
It's a cool idea but just a "bit much" IMO.

But I skip over them mostly. Maybe there could be a question or box when creating a profile that would allow the new user to quickly tell us something about themselves, and have a thread started for them without them have to learn the ins and outs of the system right away. Also then those that really don't want to can opt out.
