    Vikings vs Bengals

Howdy Vikes fans. Big Bengals fan here. I've been lurking on your forums for a few days now trying to gauge what you guys think of the big game this weekend, but haven't seen much.

What do you think your boys need to do to notch a win? What are you worried about as far as Cincinnati goes?

Personally, I believe we can stop any running attack (but having Peko out truly concerns me) and that we can run on anyone. We play in a division that truly focuses on those two areas, and have dominated the other 3 teams this year. Add our two top-flight corners into the mix and I think we can take away most teams' top two receivers. However, we've been having a pretty rough go with the screen game, slot receivers, and tight ends. Shianco (sp?) scares me a bit because of that, but I read that he's questionable for the game. Whats wrong with him? Also, since we're more of a "between the tackles" type of running team, the Williams brothers give me a little concern. I was shocked to see EJ's horrific injury...has Jasper Brinkley seen any significant playing time this season?

Anyway, here's hoping to an exciting game and that both teams can come out of it healthy and ready for a deep playoff run.

Welcome wcucarter...I won't answer all your questions, but suffice to say IMO this is a must game for us to win. Why? To show that we can beat a good to very good team. You are without Peko, but I see you have Shaun Smith in there, and he's a fireplug.

Our running game has had its problems, and I am very concerned facing a guy like Zimmer, who I think is one of the best DC's in the game.

Brinkley is a hitter, but he's played only on ST's...EJ will be sorely missed. He's the heart and soul of the D. But no excuses, good teams overcome injuries, no matter who it is. Let's hope for a good hard-hitting game with no injuries.

I think we really need Winfield back given the injury to EJ. Our young corners filled in admirably, but they are not a long-term solution at this point in their development.

With your team being a "between the tackles" running team, I normally would not be worried due to the big boys up front for us. However, EJ was a huge part of our success and he is gone. Brinkley is a rookie, he is a hard hitter who is likely going to make a few big plays and screw up a few times as well... He's been a very good special teamer for us thus far; I think everybody is anxious to see what the kid has got. He's going to be a huge drop-off from EJ no matter what. Our situation isn't unlike when the Bears lost Urlacher.

That being said, I don't believe Benson has had a great deal of success in the past against us; we've faced him more than a few times.

Passing wise: We are three deep in receivers; though Berrian hasn't done much this year for us, he is still a threat and needs to be accounted for. He can take it to the house any time he catches it, though the balls have gone elsewhere this year. Rice is showing what he's capable of - hands of glue and a knack for finding a hole in the zone. Favre loves him...even more than Harvin. I'm not sure how the national media has covered this kid, but he's looking damn good. He'll go across the middle like Ward/Boldin, is not afraid to take a hit at all. He's got an uncanny ability to absorb a hit and NOT fall down; that's gotten him a couple TDs alone this year. Great field awareness and definitely has a "link" with Favre. When you're nickel CB is on him, they better be good. Against a shut-down CB, I don't know how he'd do, so I'm glad to have Rice and Berrian in the mix. Shianco is underrated and can do serious damage if given the chance - he's a less physically-gifted Vernon Davis in a way...

You may be lucky in that the Vikes are pretty dinged up. I haven't kept up with every injury, but we were very thin last week.

Best of luck in the future and thanks for posting.

You haven't seen much because most are still shocked from Sunday night. Follow what the Cards did and you will beat us. Peterson is in a funk. Get at Favre, get a lead, and you will be fine. The only thing that scares me about the Bungals is the ability to pass. If we can hold you like we did with Big Ben, we should pull out the win. Favre will want to prove that this game was a fluke and he is not looking to be labeled that guy who fades at the end of the year. He will be focused. Me guess is that he has been in the film room non stop since the Cards game. He will be ready. Peterson is another story. I hope he snaps out of this. I know a few hate me for this but I would like to see us go with Taylor for a game. IMO Peterson is not healthy. Our secondary is hurt and the two in the back seem confused. This and AP concern me. If we can get our run game going, Favre will carve up that D. If we can hold off the passing attack, I don't think you will get many rushing yards on us. This will be a close one. The one who comes most prepared will win. Chilly preparedness scares me. I have always like Marvin Lewis. We will get many answers after Sunday. I can't wait.

This game could very well be a preview of the 2010 Super Bowl.

The Bengals offense can run, they can pass, they can smash mouth, they can finesse. The defense is stacked with quality players geared to shut down the run and cover receivers.

With that said, what the Vikings need to beat the Bengals is pressure on Palmer every down. Especially with a rookie linebacker and possibly Winfield not playing. The defense cannot allow Palmer to get in a rhythm or else he will pick the Vikings apart. The Williams wall should do well enough to slow the running game, they do every week and special teams need to be sharp and precise.

On offense, Peterson needs at least 20-25 touches. Favre needs to change up the speed and style of the passing game. More quick hits if the corners are playing soft. Perhaps get Percy Harvin more involved in runs, more than his standard one reverse per game. Perhaps line him up in the back field for several plays, see how the defense defends him.

I believe it will be a high scoring affair. I just hope the Vikings score one more point than the Bengals.

    Re:Vikings vs Bengals

Welcome to the site! My brother is a huge Bengals fan (we went out to Cincy to witness the Bengals drubbing of the Vikes in 2005) and Always love talking to other fans stuck with this teams!

I personally do not find myself all that concerned with this contest.

I do not think the Bengals will be able to run on us and I do not fear the Bengals air attack all that much, especially if Winfield plays.

Ocho definitely is playing well, and the Bengals are doing good things offensively, but I feel we will be able to outscore them for the most part and that Cincy does not have the weapons in the air to exploit our secondary like Arizona did.

On offense I really expect us to bounce back strong. I don't think we will have a field day because that Bengals defense is strong, but we should be able to run the ball some and hit downfield, in particular in the slot with Percy and Visanthe.

I obviously am a homer ... but I like the Vikes in this one 27-17. Would not be shocked to see us blow them out, would not be shocked to see the Bengals win a squeaker either. Makes this a fun game to watch!

    Re:Vikings vs Bengals

This is certainly a tough game to predict. Both teams have incredible run defenses, and both teams are known for being to run the ball well. If you had to give an edge in the passing game, I'd say it would go to the Vikings, but the Bengals have a better pass defense. I'm thinking this will come down to matchups.

When the Bengals are running, I like the Vikings matchups. We have the Williams Wall between the tackles, and I think Brinkley can hold water with their help. Where we will really miss EJ will be when the Bengals attack the edges. EJ was great at recognizing the run, escaping the backside block, and making the tackle while the corner held contain. Having Winfield back will definitely help us in the running game.

When the Bengals are passing, I again like the Vikings. The Bengals don't have the receivers which the Cardinals do, which should allow us to blitz a bit more, if necessary. Jared Allen will hopefully return to his norm. We have had trouble covering multiple elite WR/TE types, but one stud rarely gives us trouble.

When the Vikings are running? I can't go against my man AD but this is not exactly the matchup for him to get going again. I see it as a wash.

When the Vikings are passing, it really depends on how the running game works. We have shown inability to effectively pass if we can't keep the defense honest, which leads to turnovers. If you can stop our run, you at least have a chance to stop our pass, but that is no easy task. I hope you have depth at CB because it will definitely be tested.
