Wow, the Bears are now done

Behind him as he walked off an airplane Thursday night, Tim Couch pulled a Cleveland Browns-issued suitcase.

The quarterback and No. 1 pick in 1999 is hoping to trade it in for some new luggage after being without a team since the Green Bay Packers released him in the final cuts after a poor preseason in which he was hampered by shoulder tendinitis. He will undergo a physical for the Bears this morning to see just how much baggage he is carrying and will work out for the coaching staff following practice.

For now, Couch's arrival is only as a guest appearance in the Halas Hall quarterback sitcom, but he's hopeful of having a supporting role by next week.

There is no doubt everything is up for grabs with coach Lovie Smith saying he will keep wraps on whether Jonathan Quinn or Craig Krenzel will start Sunday's game at Tampa Bay until game time.

"That's what I'm hoping for, [to sign next week],' Couch said. "I hope they are thinking the same thing I am because I would like to do it as soon as possible and just get going learning what I have to in order to get out there playing again.'

The Bears remain committed to Rex Grossman as their starter in 2005. As bleak as their situation now is, they are at least proving that general manager Jerry Angelo does perform his due diligence by looking at Couch. They are exhausting every possibility in searching for a quality backup now that Quinn has proven he's not that person. Chad Hutchinson remains No. 3 on the depth chart and is taking time learning the playbook. He could be an option before long, too.

"Most of the time you don't keep four quarterbacks, but in our situation we're keeping all options open,' Smith said. "We'll always look to improve our team. Hopefully, [Couch] will have a great workout and we'll try to do something with him.'

His possible addition raised a few eyebrows in the locker room, but veterans are used to it. The Bears have changed starting quarterbacks 24 times in the last 80 games.

"I don't have any reaction to it right now,' Quinn said. "He's just in for a workout and if they sign him, then we'll deal with it here. I would think they're trying to get the best 53 they can.'

Couch was released by the Browns on June 11 after the team tried unsuccessfully to trade him after the signing of Jeff Garcia in March. Cleveland basically banned him from its workout facilities and offseason program and he says that contributed to his shoulder woes when he got to Green Bay after being signed to a $1.3 million, one-year contract. There, the plan was that he might eventually replace Brett Favre.

But his shoulder got progressively worse during training camp, he missed about 10 practices, and he completed 11 of 34 passes for 96 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions in the preseason. He filed an injury grievance against the Packers last month, claiming he was hurt when he was released. Until it's resolved, $300,000, half his base salary, counts against Green Bay's salary cap.

"Because of the Browns, I didn't have an offseason,' Couch said. "I didn't get to do any minicamps or any quarterback schools so I show up for training camp and I was behind. They were trying to get me a ton of reps, which is a good thing, but it shocked my arm and it just kept getting worse and worse.'

He visited noted sports orthopedic specialist James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala., and was prescribed four weeks of rest. He took a little more time than that off and just began throwing Monday, two days before the Bears called.

The 27-year-old is one of three failures from the boom-or-bust QB class of '99. Cade McNown and Akili Smith are out of football. Two of the other five passers taken in the top 12 picks -- Philadelphia's Donovan McNabb and Minnesota's Daunte Culpepper -- are early MVP candidates. Couch fell out of favor with coach Butch Davis in Cleveland.

If his shoulder checks out, he presents a durable option with more experience than anyone the Bears have. Whether he could be of any help this season with 11 games remaining is a question.

"It's up to the individual [how long it takes to be ready to play],' Smith said. "It's hard for me to talk on a guy I never really met. I was at St. Louis last year when we played them when he was at Cleveland. He led a comeback against us that fell a little short.'

Offensive coordinator Terry Shea and quarterbacks coach Wade Wilson are unfamiliar with Couch, who doesn't know much about their offense, but is eager to learn.

"My arm feels good for the little I've been throwing,' Couch said. "I'm looking at this as a great opportunity to get back out there.'

I heard that Jeff George keeps calling them for a tryout. He wants to play this year.

I think it was Clayton the little guy on ESPN that is from Seattle, said that George looks good and has a strong arm still.

They may try him out if they don't like cOUCH.

Have you ever seen a race of turtles, and they all go the wrong way instead of towards the finish line?

    Welcome to the NFC North.

Yes they are. Living in Cleveland I know all about the Couch saga. He was horrible. But, maybe he will do all right if he's kinda like Dilfer (just don't lose the game for us Trent). Oh well, the Bears are not a threat any time soon!
