Winfield appears doubtful for Sunday

Winfield appears doubtful for Sunday

Pro Bowl cornerback Antoine Winfield hasn't been ruled out of Sunday's game because of a sprained right foot, but it appears to be an extreme long shot the veteran will be able to play against the Steelers. At least that was the feeling coming out of the Vikings locker room today.

...

Linebacker Ben Leber, speaking about what Paymah had to do against the Ravens, sounded as if he thinks Winfield won't be on the field this weekend. "It was a tough position to put any corner in last week," Leber said. "Backups get marginal reps during the week and to ask these guys to come in and play at a high level is a tough thing to do. No doubt they have to do it. This is our first real test with [Winfield] not being in the lineup so it still remains to be seen."

...
Well, that sucks.

But good teams find ways to win despite injuries.
I think this will be a good chance for the Vikings to show everyone that they are a good team.

Ouch, that really hurts.
At least we have all week to game plan for him being out, hopefully they come up with a good solution.

This is bad news.

Knowing Winfield I think he might try to give it a go. But knowing the conditions that Heinz Field is normally in, I would think he will sit when it comes to gametime decision.

I hope we can figure out a logical way to run our secondary without him so that we don't have to worry about getting dusted all game again.

It certainly does suck... and what's worse is that we're a team that depends on our good players to carry us. With him being out, we're relying on our coaching schemes and gameplans to makeup for his absence... we all know how I feel about our coaching staff.

Ive had a sprained foot a few times, playing soccer and football, and its 2 weeks to heal usually. Ben is going to pick our secondary apart like Brady did to us last year. Im betting 350 yards. Unless our safties learn how to play in a few days. So AD and Farve will have to have another HUGE game.

That was almost 3 seasons ago...

might be bad news, but its going to show how good of a coach chilly and frazier are. you devise a different game plan now, different defensive schemes, rotate coverages, blitz more, provide extra safety help, etc. the patriots had their corners go down and had troy brown doing a decent job. he got picked on regularly by opposing qbs and did an decent job.

but then again the patriots do have bill bellicheck and we have brad childress. Lets see if chilly deserves the contract extension

Ben's not the kind of QB who picks apart defenses.
usually he gets some big gains because he has an hour to throw the ball.
If we can pressure him enough, we should be alright.
I'd expect 300+ passing yards again, but that seems to be the average over the past 5 games anyway.

I think Ben will throw for 300+ yards.
But I think that will be because they won't be able to run successfully against us and I see them playing catch up.
Ben is no Peyton Manning or Drew Brees but he is still pretty good.
However our front 4 will prove to be his biggest challenge for them thus far.
It just seemed forever the time he got in the pocket against teams they previously played.
Plus he does have pretty good receivers to get open and run after the catch.
I do see Ben picking apart our secondary but it can totally go the other way around if our pass rush gets to him and forces errant throws.
Either way, this will be a huge test for both sides.

I am not sure I agree with your assesment.
The Steeler offense is built much like the Ravens: tall strong QBs, Young, athletic, pass catching RBs who carry a load, and sound pass catching receivers.
There isn't 1 person that you can necessarily game plan against.
I would imagine that the Steelers have been watching film of our 4th quaters over the past 3-4 games and will devise an offensive game plan based how teams have attacked us like that.
