Not even close....Steckel hands down, he sucked! Anyone who picked Tice needs to look up some Vikings history cuz Steckel was horrible in the 80's....if you weren't old enough to see Steckel's work, you can't truly appreciate the suckiness....Tice is a coaching guru when compared to Steckel, thats how bad Les was!
I picked Tice and I stand by my decision. Why? Like I explained in the previous post:

So Tice had a team that was the result of a busted D picks over Denny's tenure and a relative lack of D building for a decade. Tice and company did a decent job whittling away at the defensive woes and dealing with an incompetent owner in Redneck McCombs. The offense was a top-tier offense when Tice took the team over and managed to coach the team to one losing season, one 0.500 season and two 9-7 seasons. He was at the cusp of winning but showed a great tendency to fold. The 6-0 start and missing the playoffs by losing to a pathetic Cardinals team; the 5-1 start followed by a 3-7 finish; and ending with a 2-5 start and a strong finish...but not strong enough to make the playoffs. His inability to close the deal and get over the hump was his demise.

I still go with Tice as being the worse coach that actually had a chance to perform with the possible exception of Norman Van Brocklin who I don't remember much about. Steckel was pathetic and was the coach for one year. Bud Grant only had a 3-8-3 record his first year as coach so I'll stick with the man that had a chance to perform and folded when it counted--Tice.

Yes, Steckel was a joke, but it was so obvious he only lasted for one year and the Vikings had to pull Bud Grant out of retirement. That is bad. Tice had many opportunities to get over the hump and couldn't do it. Look at the results from his 'successful' years. We ain't talking about the Saints here, a playoff victory doen't mean much. Given what Tice had to work with and how close he came to making the playoffs he should have done better.

That could be true, we will never know unless he's successful after his on-the-job training with the Vikings and he gets another chance.

The point is if he was the worse in the Vikings franchise history as of this moment. That has nothing to do with how successful or unsuccessful he is in the future. Like someone said earlier, it is a two horse race and Steckel is the worse, but based on the comparative advantage that Tice had to perform (multiple years) he did not lead the team to anyting.

Re: Who was the worse Vikings coach in franchise history?

Also, just for comparisions sake ... the 1983 Vikings were 8-8 under Bud Grant, the 1985 Vikes were 7-9 under Grant ... in between they were 3-13 under Steckel ... so that shows that he underperformed ALOT ... Tice took over a 5-11 team and improved to 6-10 then 9-7 before stumbling to 8-8 and back to 9-7 ... so at least Tice showed some ability to get a team going on the up ... he just seemed to plateau ... by the way ... if Tice had finished 3-13 in 2002 he also would be a ONE YEAR coach like Les ... there is a reason Les is a one year coach ... so saying he was only around one year and cannot be compared is a little silly ... he only deserved to be around one year ... Tice earned his second year at least.

The only reason Tice got his second year is because Redneck was too cheap to pay someone a decent salary. Tice was named interim coach when Denny walked and many were surprised to see him stay on as head coach. He was lucky to keep the position and it was due to Redneck. Like I said before, Steckel was a moron and was so pathetic they had to take Bud away from duck and pheasant hunting to save face. So that is where we stand, I still think that Tice getting his on-the-job training wasted good years when the Vikings had a competitive team. No one will ever be able to prove it, but my instinct says that the Vikings would have been in the playoffs the last three years with a better head coach. Neither Steckel nor Tice was worthy of coaching the Vikings during their tenure. Maybe Tice would have done ok with Zygi as the owner, possible, we will never know.

As I remember ALL these guys, God am I getting old, it was a toss-up between Norman Van Brocklin and Les Steckel for the worse coach. I really liked Jerry Burns and Bud Grant.

Re: Who was the worse Vikings coach in franchise history?

Les Steckel is the correct answer. I have never seen the Vikings play such a poor season, and he had no influence over the players.

Other than that, I honestly believe the Vikings have overall had some great coaches. Although Bud is obviously the best, I was always a fan of Denny and don't share a lot of fan disdain for him. He was able to take control of a team that was basically run by veteran players, and installed an offense that got the team to the playoffs with several QBs who were considered past their prime. The Vikings were usually respected under Denny as a tough team and legitimate playoff contender.

Burns lost control of the team in his final seasons, but overall he did a good job in Minnesota. He knows offense and was the real inventor of the West Coast Offense, IMO. He brought the team out of a rough spot in the mid 80s and got us to the playoffs several times.

Tice honestly I don't think was that bad a coach. He's one of the few guys to become a head coach with no previous experience coaching at the college level or even as a coordinator, and he had nothing to work with besides Culpepper and Moss. He was seen by Red as a cheap hire, and I think he got shafted under McCombs. Made some dumb mistakes but was responsible for bringing a lot of free agent talent to Minnesota.

Hopefully our next leader will carry on the winning tradition of this team, and take us to the next level of winning a Super Bowl.

Les has got to be the worst coach we've had. Van Brocklin was here more from his reputation as a player but he also had to build the team from the beginning so i give him a little slack.

    Exactly.

Norm was given more of an uphill battle from the start.

    Les...well he just sucked...very bad.

I remember Viking purple and gold bumperstickers in 1984 that said, "We need Less Steckel!"
