u cant be a godo coach with out a godp support staff with that said les had to have bene the worse. Considering what tice was given to work he did a pretty damn good job for not having any other coaching xpercience besisdes TE/Line. When he gets a offinsive cornitor taht dosnt state hes to over welmed and a defnse coritantor taht nows hwo to bltz he will be a great coach

I yelled at my TV more this year than ever for him to get decent drives going, stop running, run shotgun, stop dumping off screens, talk to your defense, etc.
Close number 2 is Denny Green. What a choke artist hack.
How is Denny a choke artist hack? Has ANY Viking Coach won the Super Bowl? I guess that means they're ALL choke artist hacks???

    Les no doubt!

We were the laughing stock of the NFL back then.

Career Records with Vikings excluding playoffs

1961- 1967 Norman Van Brocklin (losing record)

    1968-1983 & 1985 Bud Grant (winning record)

    1984 Les Steckel (losing record)

    1986-1991 Jerry Burns (winning record)

    1992-2001 Dennis Green (winning record)

    *2001-2005 Mike Tice (even record)

*excluding last game of 2001 season as interim HC.

Norman Van Brocklin is the guy that I can't remember much about, he quit coaching when I was four years old. I give him the benefit of the doubt since he had a new team and can't really speak about his coaching prowess much.

There is no doubt that Les Steckel was horrible, I remember that like it was yesterday.

Tice inherited a team on the theoretical decline, tough to tell because it was only one losing season. Denny's record during his tenure by year:

    1992: 11-5 (NFC Central Championship)
    1993: 9-7
    1994: 10-6 (NFC Central Championship)
    1995: 8-8
    1996: 9-7
    1997: 9-7
    1998: 15-1 (NFC Central Championship)
    1999: 10-6
    2000: 11-5 (NFC Central Championship)
    2001: 5-11

So Tice had a team that was the result of a busted D picks over Denny's tenure and a relative lack of D building for a decade. Tice and company did a decent job whittling away at the defensive woes and dealing with an incompetent owner in Redneck McCombs. The offense was a top-tier offense when Tice took the team over and managed to coach the team to one losing season, one 0.500 season and two 9-7 seasons. He was at the cusp of winning but showed a great tendency to fold. The 6-0 start and missing the playoffs by losing to a pathetic Cardinals team; the 5-1 start followed by a 3-7 finish; and ending with a 2-5 start and a strong finish...but not strong enough to make the playoffs. His inability to close the deal and get over the hump was his demise.

I still go with Tice as being the worse coach that actually had a chance to perform with the possible exception of Norman Van Brocklin who I don't remember much about. Steckel was pathetic and was the coach for one year. Bud Grant only had a 3-8-3 record his first year as coach so I'll stick with the man that had a chance to perform and folded when it counted--Tice.

Re: Who was the worse Vikings coach in franchise history?

I have to say Les Steckel hands down. All this Tice performing less with more stuff is wrong. I mean they were nearly 25 million under the cap for his first three years and he still had them in the playoffs one of those years. Also ... just for fodder ... in 2003 and 2004 less than 50 percent of major publications predicted the Vikings to make the playoffs ... so the fact that he did it once slightly exceeds expectations ...
On the other hand ... he did start 6-0 and 5-1 in those seasons to get expectations up and then crumble and he did blow important late games this season ... so I could easily see me putting him second on this list ... but if you ever get a chance to see the team or any film of when Steckel coached this team I think you will have little problem seeing how awful a coach he was ... at least Tice can get players to play for him ... Burns, Grant and Green are clearly better than Tice and Steckel ... so this really is a two horse race.

First of all, any coach has to be a leader, he might be a bad coach, but a leader none the less.
Mike Tice was a good coach, not the best, but we have definatly had worse.
Steckel on the other hand, I'm surprised he wasn't hanging by a rope from the goal post at the end of training camp, all I remember hearing about was ALL the players hated him. Tice might not have won anything, but we had some hope, we always knew that red screwed him over, and just wanted to see what he could really do.

Not even close....Steckel hands down, he sucked! Anyone who picked Tice needs to look up some Vikings history cuz Steckel was horrible in the 80's....if you weren't old enough to see Steckel's work, you can't truly appreciate the suckiness....Tice is a coaching guru when compared to Steckel, thats how bad Les was!

In the column of every season besides this one of mike tice, you should be sure to mention after (Red Mccombs was owner).

I would've loved to see what tice would have been able to do with zygi as an owner. Red was definitely a handicap and unfortunately you can only wonder how we could've done without him.

I guess my point is that you shouldn't judge tice as the worst coach in history, but maybe the unluckiest to have to coach under an owner like red.
