Watching the NFL playoffs, a couple of things occur to me about winning in the modern NFL. I have to - as a Vikings fan - wonder if the Vikings will *ever* do these things in way you have to to get a ring in the modern NFL:
1. Pass with extreme precision and accuracy. Pass on most downs.
2. Run a complex offense involving 4 and 5 receiver sets. Test the defense with that.
3. Not make a lot of mistakes on offense (i.e. motion penalties, etc.)
4. Tackle well
5. Have two decent running backs to keep the defense honest
6. Have 'good enough' special teams
1. Tell that to the '05 Steelers.
2. Tell that to the '05 Steelers.
3. True.
4. True.
5. Got that covered. Though I don't think you have to have two.
6. True.
A good QB and a pass rush is all we "need" to make a legit run in the NFC. If we can get those two things going heading into next season, we'll be making some noise for sure! The language and concepts contained herein are

Re: Who are we kidding ??
The passing/spread trend is not perfect, and will not last forever. In time, defenses will be geared to stop them and will be exposed to other attacks, that is just the nature of the game. There is no guaranteed scheme to win a super bowl

I could reference the '00 Ravens and the '02 Bucs too. You get the point though. Good fundamental football can win it all.The language and concepts contained herein are

Re: Who are we kidding ??
I wouldn't compare it to the '05 Steelers, because we are not facing defenses from 2005.
I also think that the Steelers had a decent, high-% QB called Roethlisberger, by the way. They were not all about the run.
We are facing defenses from now, and they play a bit differently. Teams blitz a lot and throw complex zone blitzes. I think if you look at most of the teams who were good this year, they run these type of 4 and 5 receiver sets, and the QB is excellent (Manning, Favre, Brady, etc.).
Of course, you can win another way, but I am just saying, running between the tackles and "owning" the line of scrimmage doesn't really seem to be the way to win, at least this year.

Dude, Big Ben threw an average of like 12 passes per game that season. I think he only threw 12 or 13 in the supberbowl.
Yeah he was a high percentage guy, but they were certainly ALL about the run that year. The language and concepts contained herein are
