I think, and HOPE, that this is just media trying to stir something up.
Winfield missed the voluntary camps last year too!
He then showed up and played hard all season!
I would think that he could see that Smoot was not playing up to his pay, which was very similar to what Winfield is making...4.9 million this year? is not a small bit of change!!

He did speak out some last year, and Marcus pretty much got fired for opening up his mouth...so there may be some tension, but supposedly, he and Chilly talked through that last year, and everything was fine...???

If he wants more money, it might be a good time to sign him up to a long, career contract!!
We've still got around 20 mill in space, don't we?
Give him a roster bonus, and it all counts this year...IMO he has more than earned his pay with 85,98,97 tackles in a year!

In fact, Winfield has told various teammates, including safety Darren Sharper, that he wants to stay in Minnesota. "The thing about this camp is that it's not mandatory," Sharper said. "You can't really look down on a guy if he's not here. You always like to have your guys here, but one thing we know about Antoine is that when it comes to Sundays, he's probably our best player here. We know we can count on him."

Well if he missed last year's then it can't be a direct result of Nate Clements contract.
Sounds like he just takes the term "voluntary" seriously.

The answer to the headline question is that nobody in the media knows for sure what’s got Vikings cornerback Antoine Winfield staying away from voluntary camps he regularly attended in the past.

i just dont like that his agent went mum.
i mean, if it's a non-issue then just say the camp was voluntary and he'll be ready for training camp and the season.
it seems like a ploy, but we do have the leverage though cuz he's got years left.
he doesn't help him at all if he claims he's gonna holdout.
he might as well play and just bitch the whole time, at least he still gets paid good money.
hopefully they can just hash it out before it even picks up steam
