TOM POWERS: Ol' Red's attitude could use humility
    TOM POWERS
    Pioneer Press Columnist

I have never known anyone from Texas who didn't think he was a football expert. Apparently, they consider that to be their birthright, along with wearing oversized belt buckles, pointy boots and blue jeans that rarely see the inside of a washing machine.

So it comes as no surprise that Vikings owner Red McCombs fancies himself a connoisseur of the game and likes to talk about what's happening in the "trenches" — even though almost everyone else quit using that term 20 years ago.

The fact that he dressed down the team after last Sunday's loss, and subsequently sort of half-apologized, also is no shocker. Immediately following the defeat, McCombs stood outside the locker room and watched a TV monitor as Giants quarterback Kerry Collins grinned and talked about winning in the Metrodome.

Purple smoke was seeping from the owner's ears.

What is surprising, however, is the lack of respect that McCombs continually shows toward coach Mike Tice.

By NFL standards, McCombs pays Tice so little in salary that appreciative fans might consider passing the hat at the Metrodome. Then the Tice family could buy some cabbage and onions and have soup on Thanksgiving.

Granted, McCombs gave Tice his chance to coach in the NFL. But the guy has proven himself to be capable. Remember, McCombs gave Dennis Green a contract extension after the former coach had an impressive exhibition season.

After inheriting a mess, Tice eventually ran off nine victories in a row. Instead of a contract adjustment, or even a basket of fruit, all he got was an angry owner showing him up in the locker room after his first loss in 10 tries.

Would McCombs have done that if Green still were coaching? I think so. The difference is that Green would have waited for him to finish and then chimed in: "Damn right, Red! They humiliated themselves and they humiliated you and me! Right, pal?"

But Tice doesn't have that sort of Machiavellian cunning. He is forthright and he is loyal to his players. If you insult them, you insult him. Fortunately, Tice did have enough common sense not to pick McCombs up by his oversized belt buckle and stuff him in a locker.

Otherwise we'd have had some college or high school coach named Bobby Joe running practice today.

The owner also has been fairly sparing in his praise of Tice, whom Green labeled "not ready" before he took the high road out of town.

Even Tice kids about that label. He joked a couple of weeks ago that as soon as the team lost a game he was going to be "not ready" again.

McCombs displays a general standoffishness toward his coach. Perhaps he is worried about being twice burned. After all, Red ended up being manipulated by his previous coach, eventually bestowing title after title on the power hungry, paranoid Green

Then he ended up eating the huge contract he probably never should have given him in the first place.

In any event, McCombs doesn't go too far out of his way to credit Tice. And what he did after last Sunday's game smacked of flat-out disdain.

I guess Tice better keep winning. Apparently, the owner isn't sold on him.

As for Monday's apology, Red was only sorry he got caught. Anyone who thinks McCombs would have apologized if his remarks hadn't been made public by the Pioneer Press is nuts.

Those same people probably figure Kobe Bryant, even if he hadn't been caught, would have confessed to his hotel room escapade and still bought his wife a diamond the size of Rhode Island.

Tice has gotten the most out of the 2003 Minnesota Vikings. No one else, Texas bred or otherwise, could have done any better to this point. McCombs ought to treat his coach with a little more respect.
