Re: Welcome to MN: Garrett Mills

A player lost, another gained on active day for Vikings

To Bill Belichick's chagrin, they took tight end Garrett Mills from New England. To Brad Childress' chagrin, Kansas City signed well-regarded rookie quarterback Tyler Thigpen.

The Vikings added an intriguing tight end prospect but lost a promising quarterback during a flurry of activity Sunday at Winter Park....

Good signing, now hopefully we cut Dugan. Mills is a much better receiver than Dugan and Tahi is a better FB than Dugan.

I do not care all that much for Dugan.......it's just - I've never seen anything in his play that really warranted the lengthy extension we gave to him.

So is he going to just fill a spot or is this an indication that Shank may not be developing like he was supposed to?

I was talking to a guy at work who is a Pats fan.
He says that Mills is more of a FB than a TE.
He can run/catch and should be able to break down a LB if they try to cover him with one but he isn't a very good blocker.

He did say that he can find the seam well, catches just about everything that gets near him and can run after the catch, but again, he isn't to good of a Blocking TE.

Sounds like a situational kindof guy to me.
Very interesting though.

I don't think Mills has any immediate role on the team (check out his stats).
It seems that he is on the active roster only because it was mandatory for the team to get him.
It doesn't look like Shiancoe has been performing to well but he has been bothered by an injury (doesn't explain away the drops), but we know Chili isn't gonna give up on his investment already. Hopefully Kleiny can continue his success from camps in the meanwhile.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. I think once he learns the system he will be an active player. I don't think Childress has been happy with Shiancoe. Apparently Belichek liked this guy's game too from what was posted on the "Wedgie" thread. I'm not saying he is going to be Antonio Gates or anything, but Childress may think he is a better option than what we have for certain situations.
Disclaimer: I'm an idiot.

Sadly that seems to be a common theme.
