The Vikings were awarded former New England TE Garrett Mills today on waivers, according to a report in the Boston Globe. He will become part of the Vikings’ 53-man roster, which means someone will have to be released today to make room for him.

Mills was a fourth-round draft pick last year but was placed on injured reserve midway through the season.

Mills led the nation's tight ends in receiving as a collegiate senior

    April 30, 2006

New York, NY - University of Tulsa senior tight end Garrett Mills was the 106th selection the 2006 NFL Draft when the New England Patriots made him their fourth pick overall.

Mills was the ninth selection in the fourth round as the NFL Draft's second day began on Sunday.

The last Tulsa player drafted was quarterback James Kilian selected by the Kansas City Chiefs in the seventh round of last year's NFL draft. Mills is the highest draft choice for Tulsa since receiver Chris Penn was selected by the Kansas City Chiefs in the third round as the 96th player chosen in the 1994 draft.

Mills was the nation's most prolific tight end in college football in 2005, as he led all tight ends in receiving and set an NCAA single-season record for receiving yards by a tight end with 87 receptions for 1,235 yards.

As a senior, Mills earned All-America honors as a first team selection by ESPN.com, SI.com and CBS SportsLine.com. He was named second-team All-America by the Walter Camp Foundation and earned third-team accolades by Associated Press.

Mills established a career-high against #18 Oklahoma in 2005 when he caught 13 passes for 152 yards. He tied that career-best with 152 yards and one TD on eight catches in Tulsa's win in the C-USA Football Championship Game against UCF. Mills was named the MVP of the Conference USA Championship Game.

Mills completed the season ranked fifth nationally in total receiving yards, 16th in receiving yards per game and 19th for receptions per game.

With a cumulative 3.91 grade point average in management, Mills was a recipient of the National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete Postgraduate Award and was one of 16 finalists for the 2005 Draddy Trophy. He was also selected as an ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA First-Team Academic All-American.

In his career, Mills had 201 receptions for 2,389 yards and 23 touchdowns in 50 games. He became the only tight end in school history to surpass 2,000 career receiving yards and ranks sixth on Tulsa's career receiving yardage list. Mills was a three-time first-team all-conference selection.

Sounds like we got another TE with soft hands. Is he a blocker? We have the Saucer for that, just hope he can get downfield and help Tarvaris.

Good signing, now hopefully we cut Dugan. Mills is a much better receiver than Dugan and Tahi is a better FB than Dugan.

Mills will fit well in Childress' west coast offense. I would also like us to cut Dugan not Tahi. I wonder if we are gonna make any more moves?? This is a fun time in the season!

Mills was a fourth-round draft pick last year but was placed on injured reserve midway through the season. The Patriots wanted to put him on their practice squad so badly that coach Bill Belichick called Vikings coach Brad Childress this morning about him. As Childress recounted during an appearance on WCCO-AM’s Softballs with Sid, Belichick apparently was suggesting he would claim a Vikings castoff if the Vikings did not back off of his player.

I truly think this will be a good pickup especially if he shows any of talent he did prior to the NFL

    Screw Belichick!
He knew how the system worked when he cut Mills.
Good solid pickup for the Vikes.
