This is very likely the case ... and I am not totally against it.

It appears that Alex Smith would likely be cut by the 49ers ... but he may be trade bait to a team that knows they want him as a starter because his contract is relatively low for a full-time starting QB.

I don't see us giving up picks to get him ... and making a move on him as a FA doesn't make sense because he will very likely be getting starter money from somewhere else. Look at all the teams that could very well be in the QB market that he would have a much stronger chance at being the starter – Philly, Arizona, NY Jets, Buffalo, Cleveland, Jacksonville, Oakland and Kansas City. Now, many of those teams might be happy with the guy(s) they got, but they could certainly explore Smith and he would have to like his chances better in those spot.

If we want to flat out make him the starter ... I am not against it. I was not against it last season. But bringing him in to compete does not seem like a logical money move for us or a logical move for him at all.

Of that list Singer, I think I would feel most comfy with: Jason Campbell, and not too disappointed with David Carr, Joe Flacco (which is NOT happening. He will certainly start somewhere next season), Tarvaris Jackson, Matt Moore and Tyler Thigpen.

I think that Jason Campbell or David Carr would fit pretty perfectly around these parts. And Jason Campbell would have to like his chances at getting to play if Ponder's injuries or ineffectiveness creep up again.

Aren't you tired of hanging you hat on a guy that you have to hope turns out ok? To stand and say that Alex Smith and Ponder is on the same level is idotic. Also, Smith didn't just get his guys to the playoffs, he got them to the NFC championship and lost in OT. I gues the #FACTS are hard to keep track of when you are just making things up as you go. Fact smith didn't cost his teams games... #Fact, I can point out 4 games we lost because of Ponder. Why am I arguing this when I can just get the film of Ponder hitting a Defender in the back with an attempted pass. He is terrible!

I'm not a big Ponder fan. But, to be fair, I don't know if anyone can succeed with the crap WR corps we have. My personal feeling on this is that until we have some worthwhile receivers, there really isn't a lot of point in tearing up the draft or FA in search of the next QB.

Of course, we'll also need an OC who isn't retarded...

Just not a great list. That is why Campbell was my clear cut top guy. I still think Carr and a couple others are better than Joe Webb though, including T-Jack. Though I would not like to see that guy around here again ... just names that I thought on the surface make our backup better than what it is right now.

Why not fix both issues?
Why do we have to fix the WR problem and then wait and see if it's the QB...then spend 3 more years grooming the right guy only too see our star RB gone. Why can't we address WR and QB at once? Why can't we? That's why bad teams stay bad teams...a narrow focus. You have to multi task when building in the draft.

The whole deal for me comes down to you have to have the QB you want and build around them no matter what the rest of the team is like. Once that piece is in place you have the foundation for a long run of success. If you don't fix that it really doesn't matter what you do with the rest of the team if you want long term success. If you want to make a short run you can certainly do that in many ways as we have seen over the history of the league but there are no teams in the modern era who have been championship caliber over a long period of time without having a great QB under center.

Yeah i hope to be eating crow sooner rather than later.
