Re: Wally Hilgenberg has Lou Gehrig’s disease

A little history on a very damn good player.
Truely a class act and a credit to the team.

he was one of the few players to play in all four of the Vikings Super Bowl

    Wally Hilgenberg has ALS

It is with deep sorrow that I report that Wally has ALS.
He is coming public with this so I expect it to be in the news shortly.

For those of you who pray. PRAY for Wally and his family.

I will know more and report back tomorrow.

Wally is a very good man who had done LOTS for charity and supporting the right path for children.

My very best to him and his family.

Here’s a blog special … some leftovers from Patrick Reusse. Patrick visited with former Vikings linebacker Wally Hilgenberg, who has ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease), and is writing a column for tomorrow’s paper. The rest, from Patrick:
Here’s some dope (as long-ago Tribune columnist Dick Cullum used to call information) that didn’t make the cut......

Former Minnesota Vikings linebacker Wally Hilgenberg battles with ALS off the field these days, which has taken much of Hilgenberg's mobility but done little to diminish his spirit. Hilgenberg is seen at the family's Prior Lake home with his beloved black lab, Ruby

Family, religion and friends have helped the former Minnesota Vikings linebacker face Lou Gehrig's disease.

Here’s some dope (as long-ago Tribune columnist Dick Cullum used to call information) that didn’t make the cut......
...Hilgenberg always had his name in the phone book, even as a player. In January 1970, he had an interception in the Vikings’ 27-7 victory over Cleveland in the NFL Championship Game, a victory that sent Minnesota to its first Super Bowl.
“We lived in the Cedar Ridges apartments near Met Stadium,'’
Hilgenberg said. “We havd a party after the game. There were six players, with wives, and we were having a few pops.
“A fan called, asked for Wally Hilgenberg, and then said: `I was out
there when we tore down the goal posts. I have a big hunk of the post.
You played so well today, I think you deserve it. Do you want it?’
“I said, `Heck, yes.’ So, the guy comes over to the apartment
complex, and he has an 18-foot piece of goal post. Really — 18 feet. So, we find a hacksaw and cut off a 3-foot piece for each of the players at the party.
“Later, we had an artist put the score and the date on those pieces. I
still have it down in the basement.'’...
I was at that game and still have a chunk of that goal post and remember when that dude was trying to walk away with such a huge chunk of it.....while the rest of the folks wanted to divey it up.....he said he was going to give it to Hilgenberg and nobody protested.
Get your facts first, and then you can distort them as much as you please. Mark Twain

Re: Wally Hilgenberg has Lou Gehrig’s disease

I grew up in the Lakeville area.
Hilgenberg and many of the old time Vikes lived in either Lakeville or Prior Lake so I saw them around quite a bit.
Very nice people, every one of them.
Paul Krause, Hilgenberg, Siemen, Lurtzema and a few others.
They were always volunteering for the Dakota County Fair or Pan O Prog days in Lakeville.
Not only were they great players in their day they were great ambassadors for the Vikings franchise.

This is a huge loss, we'll miss you Wally.

Great stuff, guys. As much as I am sorry to hear these stories, I think it is great that fans are posting these stories. These players are purple forever, and will always be in our hearts and minds. It is great that this forum is keeping their stories alive. I am proud of you guys for putting this up there.
