I agree to a point about the linemen comment. Jackson, Rice and Harvin would help move the chains though. There is a certain mootness to the discussion.
Get Jackson.....get Randy Moss....but how is the ball going to get to them without pass protection for Favre???
The only thing that could get us to a winning season would be the acquisition of an Excellent offensive lineman.
Highly unlikely......as is a better than 8-8 season.

Re: Vincent Jackson talk
I would imagine running quick slants and screens would help the oline and favre out during times as it would have the defense off balance a bit. Thing is I'm not sure our current group of active recievers can create that quick seperation at all. That is where I think Vincent Jackson would help out the most. Correct me if Im wrong but I have only seen 1 screen run in the past 2 games and that was to Harvin who was hit immediatly.

Actually ... yes I do. He is going to come back for the final six games in San Diego regardless because he wants to be a free agent in the offseason.midgensa wrote:
Do you really think he will play on a one year contract?Purple Floyd wrote:
Has any receiver ever given 120 yards a game and three TDs for anyone?I just don't see them pulling the trigger on this one. I just don't see how he is going to be of any benefit to us in time to really matter.
He hasn't been to training camp and won't be in game shape for weeks after getting here.
He has been in a totally different scheme than what we run. The Philosophies between the Coryell type offense SD runs and the Walsh offshoot we run are night and day. Camarillo still isn't up to speed and he has been here for weeks.
Once he knows the plays and is in shape there is still the timing thing that needs to be worked out with the QB and then he has to understand how to run the WCO routes and know where and when to expect the ball. The offense he is used to running is much less reliant on timing than ours is.
Lastly all of the other subtleties like blocking responsibility, shifts, and even things like studying film on the defenders he will face (which might be totally different than the ones he is used to facing)will take time to adjust to.
Now it is entirely possible he could show up, strap on the cleats and proceed to give us 120 yds and 3 td's a game without a hiccup, but that is just not what we have seen from WR's that have been brought into this system and coached by this staff so I am not sure it is a smart move to count on this scenario being somehow different.
If we trade for him tomorrow he is eligible to start practicing as soon as the Lions' game final horn blares.
That means he has THREE full weeks of practice before he has to take the field against the Cowboys ... that is PLENTY of time to "get into game shape" and he still plays TWELVE games for us. I don't see how that is "getting here too late to help."
For only a second round pick and a one year contract ... I see very little reason NOT to pull the trigger at this point.
By game 8 or so we would have V-Jack, Sid, Percy and Cam all healthy, and even better if Berrian ever shows up.
Don't overpay ... second round pick at best ... but if he comes for that, I see no reason to pass.
How much money are you willing to shell out for 12 games?
The crappy thing about VJ's situation is that he wanted up front money, guaranteed money that is. That is money that the team that utilized his talents the last few years for cheap should want to pay him out of courtesy but is difficult for us to stomach.
For him to come out and play 12 games on a one year contract, that is to risky for him. One year guaranteed money is less than 3 year guaranteed money. Even if you gave him slightly over what he would average per year, he still runs the risk of getting injured without the security of a large contract.
I don't mind giving up the second round pick.
He definitely would sign a One year, $5M+ contract over playing the final six games for $300,000 or whatever it is.
All this ... and all of the current reports are that a team (most likely the Vikings) already agreed to a ONE YEAR contract with Jackson, but could not come to terms with the Chargers for the trade.
At this point he is screwed ... he either plays 6 games for $300,000, plays 12 games for $5 millionish to $7 millionish or he sits out and DOES NOT become a free agent.

Forgive my ignorance but why wouldn't he become a free agent if he sits out?

There s only two things stopping you - fear and common sense!! The Truth you CAN"T HANDLE THE TRUTH!!!!!!!!

No, Rice is a nice guy and his only concern is getting healthy. I sure hope he does

Than Rice should have had the surgery in the offseason so he is inline for his big contract. As it stands now, one year of great stats does not qualify for big contract. He needs to be on the field, and prove he is worth that contract.I bet rice is pissed if we pay another reciever big bucks.
Didn't Berrian have just one great year? How well is that working out for us?
