Vikings working out punters & placekickers

Another call to arms?

The Vikings quietly worked out four punters, two placekickers and two long-snappers Wednesday at Winter Park, most notably former Green Bay punter B.J. Sander.

There was no immediate indication Wednesday night that any of the Vikings' specialists -- punter Chris Kluwe, placekicker Ryan Longwell and long-snapper Loeffler -- was in jeopardy of losing his job. It is possible the Vikings are considering a specialist to replace Longwell for kickoffs only, and the Vikings might also be concerned about Kluwe's sore wrist.

Along with Sander, the other punters were Mike Barr (Rutgers), Gabe Lindstrom (Toledo) and Joel Stelly (Louisiana-Monroe). The kickers were Matt Prater (Central Florida) and Tony Yelk (Iowa State). The long-snappers were Adam Johnson (Buffalo) and Lan- don Schrage (Iowa State).

Good. Our special teams coverages suck.

I think both Kluwe and Longwell have been solid.
Kluwe's average is only low because he's pinned opponents inside the 20 so many times.
The kickoffs have been disappointing, as have the coverage on kicks and punts, so I'm guessing they're looking for a kickoff specialist who can also punt in the event of an emergency.

Hmmmm..... It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

The kickoff specialist thing seems obvious. Longwell's kickoffs aren't the strongest in the world, that's for sure.

Regarding Kluwe, I didn't know his wrist was bothering him that bad. But, whatever needs to be done, so be it.

And regarding a long snapper, I wonder if the botched point after in Detroit is being blamed on Loeffler. We'll see...

Yes, Loeffler did get a contract extension. I thought Kluwe signed a 3 year contract with us last year. He had a few dissapointing games but I thought he had some boomers against Detroit. Oh well, I'm sure they know what they are doing.

I think that Stelly is from my home parish.
Go Louisiana players!!!
;D

Edit:
He played for one of my high school's rivals, and also for my college alma mater's main rival....now I'm torn as to whether to root for him to succeed.
Dude has a leg though!!!

Re: Vikings working out punters & placekickers

Longwell has been just fine in his FG attempts, and Kluwe has been good in his punts.. As someone else said, the reason why Kluwe's punt average is lower is because he is pinning opponets inside their 20 most of the time..

Longwell's leg may not be strong enough for kickoffs, and that is most likely the reason why they are looking at other options.. It kinda sucks because you don't really want a PK, and a kickoff specialist taking up 2 of you're roster spots..

I doubt that either Kluwe, or Longwell are in jeopardy of losing their jobs.. Longwell is a good clutch kicker that has played in the most extreme playing conditions in league history.. Kluwe has a very solid leg, and kick a mile if need be..

That's the way Paul Allen called it. Botched by Kluwe.
