Re: Vikings: Winfield can ensure happy minicampers

Personally I think Winfield is a little bit overrated.
He is a tackling machine but i don't think is all that great in coverage some times.
Now don't get me wrong i think he is extremely important to our defence because of his experience and the knowledge he brings to the game and also since we have just about nobody else there with more than one year in the league.
Lets just hope he comes back with a good attitude and hope that all this stuff was blown out of proportion.
If he does have a problem then hopefully we can get something decent in return for him if thats the route we decide to take

This some stuff I posted in another thread on Winfield with respect to him being overated.
You should look at his rankings before you say he is overated.

    Ranking against all NFL LB/DB
    27 Solo Tackles
    18 (Tied) Int

    Vikes
    2nd Tackles
    2nd Solo
    1rst Pass Defended
    1rst (Tied Int)
    3rd Tackles for loss
    etc etc etc.

    Pretty respectable stats.

When the CB is asked to line up 10 yards off and make sure the defender doesn't get by, then that's what he's supposed to do.
No gambling for picks, no highlight-reel waltzes to the end zone.
Make the sure tackle and get back to the huddle.

Antoine Winfield is all that and a vicious run-stopper.
Best player on the Vikings roster, IMHO.

From the last article Singer posted:
In any event, expect the hard-hitting sure-tackler to be back on board as training camp arrives. If not, Dovonte Edwards could get his big opportunity, and that may not be such a bad thing for the Vikings.
Edwards may get his big opportunity anyway.
I wouldn't be surprised to see him and Winfield starting after training camp.
(Unless Doss is moved to CB).

Plain and simple, Winfield is a "football player".
We need more guys who play the game the way he does.
Its not his physical attributes so much that make him productive as it is his mental attributes.

respectable stats indeed but i just don't feel like he is everything some people say he is.    Don't get me wrong i think he's a very solid corner and i defintely want him on our team.    I also don't think he is overrated on a national level either he is actually probably underrated nationally.    I do remember him being on a list of the most burned CBs in the league in 05.    i know it was last year but it's hard to find any articles about how many times a corner had blown coverage, missed an INT, or anything really dealing with something he did wrong.

I don't disagree that he is not the best coverage corner in the league.
Physically he is at a bit of a disadvantage, undersized and just okay speed.
But he plays the game with as much intensity as anyone on the team, he does make big plays, and he doesn't lose his head.

Overall, we don't have great coverage corners... we have physical corners that play in a system that try to break timing and patterns and get help from players in a gap or space oriented scheme.
