    VIKINGS WIN THE SUPER BOWL

Hey I was checking out the Inside The NFL website and I came accross this article entitled "Minnesota Vikings Win the Super Bowl", which obviously cought my attention, was written by Elliot Kalb, who is a journalist for the show. This is a must read for all VIKINGS fans. This may be a little early, but it sure sounds good. Enjoy!

    Minnesota Vikings Win Super Bowl
    October 7, 2003

The headline isn't wrong, it's just four months early. That's saying a lot for a franchise that hasn't ever won a Super Bowl; and hasn't even made the big game in 26 years. But trust me, folks. This is the year of the Vikings.

No one has heard of their stud running back. Their starting quarterback went down with an injury, and the backup is a journeyman playing on his fifth team in six years. The defensive coordinator is pretty well known. Of course, he is best known for getting caught lying on his resume.

Frerotte (that's easy to spell: it ends rotten, leave off the last 'n') has played anything but rotten. He's thrown for 690 yards on just 64 attempts; a tremendous 11 yards per attempt. He's figured it out fairly quickly: if one gets the ball into the hands of Randy Moss, good things will happen.

When Daunte Culpepper hurt his back, Viking fans had every reason to worry. Look at what happened to the Jets and Falcons. They each lost their starting quarterback in the preseason, and are a combined 1-8.

Gus Frerotte is fast becoming this generations Earl Morrall. Morral took the reigns from an injured Bob Griese, and quarterbacked the undefeated Miami Dolphins for most of their undefeated season. Gus will turn the driving back to Duante Culpepper. If Frerotte doesn't play another down of football this season, he's earned every penny of his contract. Culpepper and Frerotte have combined for 12 touchdown passes and just two interceptions.

It's not just the play of the quarterback that has the fans in the Twin Cities excited.

The Vikings are averaging 150 rushing yards per game. Moe Williams is on pace to rush for 1,270 yards. The defense has intercepted 13 passes. Last year, in 16 games, the defense intercepted just 16.

Last year, Minnesota allowed 442 points and 55 touchdowns. This year, they are on pace to allow just 269 points and 29 touchdowns.

The Vikings had two unforgiving stats last year. They were -22 in sack differential and they were -18 in turnover differential.

This year, they are +1 in sack differential and +10 in turnover differential.

Second year safety Brian Russell had one interception last year, and already has five this year. The first round pick (defensive tackle Kevin Williams) has a pair of sacks. A couple of former Raiders (Lance Johnstone and Greg Biekert) have 5.5 more. We might not be talking about Alan Page and Jim Marshall; but we're sure as heck not talking about the 2002 defense, either.

Minnesota has won three road games this year, and they have a chance to go 8-0 on the road for the season! Their five remaining road trips take them to San Diego, Oakland, St. Louis, Chicago, and Arizona. The key will be to have home field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs. Let's see Tampa Bay win consecutive Championship games on the road. Let's see the Bucs match up with Minnesota. The Vikings have a much better running game. They have a better quarterback. They probably have a better offensive line. And Minnesota has the best receiver on the planet. That doesn't make it easy against Tampa. But it does make them a favorite-if the game is played indoors in Minnesota.

The Twins couldn't get past the Yankees. The Latrell Sprewell era is starting this month for the Timberwolves. It's still going to be difficult for Kevin Garnett and company to win a playoff series.

But Minnesota sports fans have more to do in late January than fly-fish. They have the Vikings. The winners of Super Bowl XXXVIII.

God Bless America, & the MINNESOTA VIKINGS!!!
